Movies – Kunal Kemmu Reflects on Breaking Child Actor Stereotypes in Bollywood

Movies – Kunal Kemmu has opened up about the challenges he encountered while making the difficult transition from a popular child actor to a leading man in the Hindi film industry. Looking back at the early phase of his career, the actor said he had to deal with preconceived notions about child artistes long before he had the opportunity to prove himself as a lead performer.

Facing Early Judgments

Speaking about the period surrounding the release of his debut film as a lead actor, Kalyug, Kunal recalled that many people questioned whether a former child actor could ever establish himself as a successful hero. He said such opinions were formed too quickly and without giving him a fair chance to showcase his abilities.

According to Kunal, he found it disappointing that assumptions about his future were made even before audiences had seen his work in a new role. He believed it was unfair to decide someone’s career path based solely on their past as a child artiste.

Rejecting the ‘Child Actor Curse’

The actor also addressed the common perception that former child stars struggle to sustain successful careers as adults. He explained that whenever a project underperforms, people are quick to describe it as the so-called “curse” of being a child actor.

Kunal said success and failure are both temporary phases in an actor’s career and should not define an individual’s journey. In his view, celebrating one successful film as the ultimate achievement or considering one disappointing result as the end of everything are equally unrealistic approaches.

He emphasized that every performer experiences highs and lows, and those fluctuations should be seen as part of a much longer professional journey rather than as permanent labels.

A Different Perspective on Success

Sharing how his outlook has changed over the years, Kunal said he now views life as a story that unfolds through different chapters. Instead of becoming overly attached to achievements or setbacks, he prefers to focus on continuous growth and remain thankful for every opportunity that comes his way.

The actor remarked that although people often describe life as short, he believes it is actually long enough to offer several chances for reinvention. Referring to the current stage of his career, he said some people describe it as his “second act,” but he prefers not to place too much importance on labels.

Kunal added that his priority is to make the most of the opportunities available today while continuing to do the work he enjoys. Rather than worrying about how long public attention may last, he chooses to take each day as it comes and remain grateful for the chance to entertain audiences.

From Child Star to Multi-Talented Filmmaker

Kunal Kemmu began acting at a young age with memorable performances in films including Sir, Raja Hindustani, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Zakhm and Dushman. He later made his transition to lead roles with Mohit Suri’s 2005 thriller Kalyug, which marked a significant turning point in his career.

Over the years, he has appeared in several popular films such as Golmaal 3, Go Goa Gone, Lootcase, Malang and Kalank. Beyond acting, Kunal expanded his creative journey by making his directorial debut with Madgaon Express, a film that received appreciation from both critics and audiences.

He is currently exploring another dimension of entertainment as the host of the reality show Alliance, adding yet another milestone to a career that continues to evolve with time.
