Gmr begins nagpur airport expansion

Initial Expansion to Improve Passenger Experience

As part of the first phase of development, GMR Airports will focus on expanding the existing passenger terminal to increase its annual handling capacity to around three million travelers. The planned upgrades are designed to improve passenger convenience through better infrastructure, smoother airport operations, and enhanced service quality. The company stated that these improvements will create a more efficient travel experience while preparing the airport for future demand.

Long-Term Vision Includes Major Capacity Growth

The modernization plan extends well beyond the initial expansion. Future development phases are intended to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to nearly 30 million. Alongside terminal improvements, the project will include extensive upgrades to airside facilities, construction of a new Air Traffic Control tower, and the establishment of a modern cargo terminal capable of processing approximately 20,000 metric tonnes of freight every year. These additions are expected to strengthen both passenger and cargo operations.

Leadership Highlights Strategic Importance

GMR Airports Chairman GBS Raju described the airport takeover as an important milestone in the company’s expansion journey. He said the phased development strategy will help transform Nagpur Airport into a world-class aviation facility with improved infrastructure and stronger operational capabilities. According to him, the company’s experience in airport development will support the airport’s long-term growth while creating better services for travelers and airlines alike.

Government Sees Nagpur as a National Aviation Hub

Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized that Nagpur’s geographical location gives it a natural advantage in becoming a major domestic and international transfer hub. He noted that improved connectivity from the city could benefit passengers across the country while also supporting cargo transportation, logistics services, aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), trade activities, and industrial development. The minister said these developments align with broader efforts to strengthen India’s aviation network.

GMR Expands Its Airport Portfolio

With the addition of Nagpur Airport, GMR AERO now manages or develops nine airports across India and overseas. The company currently operates airports in Delhi, Hyderabad, Goa (Mopa), Nagpur, Bidar, and Medan in Indonesia. It also provides technical support for Mactan Cebu Airport in the Philippines. In addition, GMR is developing two greenfield airport projects in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh, and Crete, Greece, further expanding its international presence in the aviation sector.

Thirty-Year Development Agreement

Under a 30-year concession agreement, GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited will implement the airport’s modernization through multiple development phases. The company believes the project will strengthen Nagpur’s role as an important center for aviation, logistics, and cargo movement while contributing to regional economic growth. As infrastructure expands over the coming years, the airport is expected to support increasing passenger traffic, encourage business activity, and improve connectivity across Central India.
