Politics – BJP Demands Equal Legal Action Over Alleged Offensive Political Remarks
Politics – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called on the Tamil Nadu government to ensure that legal action is applied consistently in cases involving alleged derogatory political remarks. The demand came after the arrest of DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan over comments he allegedly made about Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. While welcoming the police action, the BJP argued that similar complaints filed earlier against several DMK leaders should also receive equal attention under the law.
BJP Welcomes Arrest of DMK Legislator
In a statement issued on Monday, BJP State chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said the arrest of the Vilathikulam legislator was appropriate, maintaining that public representatives must uphold the dignity of constitutional offices. He said no elected official should use offensive or indecent language while addressing public gatherings, regardless of political differences.
According to Thirupathy, political debate should remain respectful and should not cross the boundaries of acceptable public conduct. He added that maintaining decorum is essential for preserving democratic values and public confidence in elected institutions.
Party Questions Alleged Double Standards
Even as the BJP expressed support for the government’s decision in the present case, it accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) of taking an inconsistent position by criticizing the arrest. Thirupathy claimed that several DMK leaders had previously made controversial remarks targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, yet those incidents did not lead to comparable legal action.
The BJP spokesperson argued that similar standards should be followed in every case involving alleged abusive political statements, irrespective of which party the individuals belong to. He said equal treatment before the law is necessary to maintain fairness and public trust.
Demand for Action on Earlier Complaints
Thirupathy stated that the BJP had submitted multiple police complaints in the past concerning remarks allegedly made by senior DMK leaders against national political figures. According to him, those complaints have not resulted in meaningful progress despite being formally registered with the authorities.
The BJP has now urged Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to direct the police to review all pending complaints filed by the party and ensure that appropriate legal procedures are followed wherever required. The party also sought an examination of why earlier cases had not moved forward.
Call for Administrative Accountability
Apart from seeking progress in the pending complaints, the BJP called for action against officials who allegedly failed to act on earlier representations. Thirupathy said police authorities should be accountable if complaints submitted through proper legal channels were not investigated in accordance with established procedures.
He maintained that impartial law enforcement strengthens democratic institutions and reinforces public confidence in the justice system. According to the BJP, every complaint deserves to be assessed on its legal merits without consideration of political affiliation.
Appeal for Respectful Political Discourse
The BJP reiterated that political competition should remain within the limits of civil and respectful debate. Thirupathy said disagreements among parties are a normal part of democracy, but personal attacks and abusive language diminish the quality of public discourse.
He further stated that the arrest of the DMK legislator should serve as a reminder that elected representatives are expected to maintain responsible conduct while speaking in public. The party emphasized that identical legal standards should apply to all political leaders, regardless of their party position or influence.
The developments have added another chapter to the ongoing political exchanges in Tamil Nadu, with the BJP pressing for what it describes as uniform enforcement of the law across all cases involving alleged offensive political remarks.
