Defence – Delhi Lieutenant Governor Pays Tribute to Marshal Arjan Singh’s Lasting Legacy
Defence – Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Friday paid homage to the remarkable legacy of Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh while addressing the Marshal of the Air Force Memorial Lecture. Speaking before an audience that included decorated veterans, senior defence officials, and serving officers, Sandhu reflected on the extraordinary contributions of one of India’s most respected military leaders, whose service extended far beyond the battlefield and continued through diplomacy and public administration.

A Life Closely Linked to Independent India
During his address, the Lieutenant Governor said that Marshal Arjan Singh’s life reflected many of the defining moments in the history of independent India. From his outstanding military achievements to his later responsibilities in public service, Sandhu noted that the former Air Force chief remained committed to the nation throughout every stage of his career. He described Arjan Singh as a personality whose journey continues to inspire future generations of military personnel and civil servants alike.
Special Connection With Delhi Administration
Recalling Marshal Arjan Singh’s tenure as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi between 1989 and 1990, Sandhu said he felt privileged to occupy the same constitutional office once held by such a distinguished national figure. He remarked that this shared institutional connection serves as a constant reminder of the responsibility attached to public office and the importance of serving citizens with dedication, honesty, and accountability.
Remembering Leadership During the 1965 War
Highlighting one of the defining chapters of Arjan Singh’s military career, Sandhu praised his leadership during the 1965 India-Pakistan conflict. He said the officer’s strategic vision and professional excellence earned him national recognition, including the prestigious Padma Vibhushan. In recognition of his lifelong contribution to the Indian Air Force and the country, Arjan Singh was later awarded the rank of Marshal of the Air Force, making him the only officer in Indian history to receive this exceptional honour.
Service Beyond the Armed Forces
The Lieutenant Governor also spoke about Arjan Singh’s successful transition from military command to diplomatic assignments and administrative responsibilities. According to Sandhu, his journey demonstrated that service to the nation is not limited to a single profession or institution. Whether in uniform or in public office, Arjan Singh consistently upheld the principles of integrity, discipline, and national commitment.
He added that for those serving in government today, the former Lieutenant Governor’s example reinforces the idea that public office carries a duty to work in the interest of the people while maintaining the highest standards of responsibility and ethical conduct.
Legacy of Integrity and Humility
Concluding his address, Sandhu said Marshal Arjan Singh represented the finest values of professionalism, patriotism, and selfless service. He noted that the veteran leader remained calm under pressure, displayed unwavering integrity throughout his career, and carried himself with exceptional humility despite receiving the nation’s highest honours.
The Lieutenant Governor said the most meaningful tribute to the former Air Force Marshal would be for citizens, institutions, and public servants to continue embracing the ideals he lived by. Upholding these principles, he added, would ensure that Arjan Singh’s legacy continues to guide future generations in serving the nation with dedication and honour.
