Karma – Anupam Kher Recalls How Subhash Ghai Cast Him as Dr Dang

Karma -Veteran actor Anupam Kher has looked back on a defining chapter of his film career as Subhash Ghai’s Karma completed 40 years on Saturday. The actor recalled how an unexpected meeting with the filmmaker eventually led to him playing the memorable antagonist Dr. Michael Dang in the 1986 action drama.

A chance meeting led to a major role

Sharing a video on social media to mark the film’s 40th anniversary, Kher spoke about the circumstances surrounding his casting. He said he had met Ghai at a party, although the two had never been introduced before that evening.

According to Kher, the filmmaker noticed him while they crossed paths as one was leaving the gathering and the other was arriving. Ghai then asked the actor to visit his office the following day.

Kher said he went to meet the director without knowing what opportunity might come from the meeting. To his surprise, Ghai offered him the part of the film’s principal villain.

Karma changed Anupam Kher’s career

Reflecting on the significance of the movie, Kher said Karma became a turning point for him. Before the film, he was largely regarded as a promising actor, but the success and visibility of the project helped establish him in a different position within the Hindi film industry.

Kher recalled that he was so excited about being offered the role that he asked Ghai who else would be appearing in the film. The director’s answer made the opportunity even more special.

The cast included several of the biggest names of the period, including Dilip Kumar, Naseeruddin Shah, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Sridevi, Poonam Dhillon and Nutan.

Kher also remembered seeing a promotional poster featuring himself alongside the legendary Dilip Kumar near the Mahim Church area of Mumbai. For an actor at that stage of his career, the sight was particularly meaningful.

Looking back after four decades, Kher expressed his gratitude to Ghai for trusting him with such an important character. He also thanked the film’s leading cast members for being part of a project that became an important milestone in his professional journey.

Dr Dang remains one of his memorable characters

The role of Dr. Dang became one of the most recognisable negative characters associated with Kher’s early career. His performance, along with the character’s distinctive dialogue, helped make the villain memorable among audiences.

To mark the anniversary, Kher also recreated one of Dr. Dang’s best-known lines from the film. The scene involves the character reacting after being slapped and declaring that the sound and humiliation of the incident would remain unforgettable.

Released in 1986, Karma brought together an ensemble cast led by Dilip Kumar and featured a mix of action, drama and revenge. Four decades later, the film continues to hold a place in discussions about popular Hindi cinema of that era.

For Kher, the anniversary was also an opportunity to acknowledge the filmmaker who gave him the chance to portray a major antagonist at a crucial point in his career.
