Birthday Protest Draws Public Attention

A unique protest by BJP ward councillor Kishan Nayak has generated widespread discussion across social media after he celebrated his birthday in an overflowing drain in New Vijay Nagar Colony’s Nagla Dhani area of Agra on Thursday. Standing knee-deep in stagnant water during light rainfall, Nayak cut a cake surrounded by local residents who gathered to support his demonstration. The unusual protest was intended to draw the attention of civic authorities toward what residents describe as a long-neglected drainage crisis affecting the locality.

Repeated Appeals Over Three Years

Nayak, who represents Ward 12 and the Nagla Harmukh area, said he has consistently raised the issue with municipal authorities for nearly three years. According to him, more than 30 written representations have been submitted to the city’s mayor and municipal commissioner requesting the cleaning and repair of a drain that stretches from Sultanganj Pulia through Langde Ki Chowki before joining the Yamuna River.

He claims that despite repeated requests, the condition of the drain has remained unchanged, forcing nearby residents to cope with overflowing wastewater, foul odour, and frequent waterlogging.

Residents Raise Safety Concerns

The councillor alleged that the drain, believed to have once served as a historic royal canal, has not undergone proper cleaning since 2011. While official records reportedly indicate that maintenance work has been carried out on several occasions, local residents say the situation on the ground tells a different story.

According to Nayak, the neglected drain has also become a serious safety hazard. He claimed that three people, including two children and a farmer, have lost their lives after falling into it over the years. He further stated that one child who reportedly fell into the drain has never been found. Residents fear that the arrival of the monsoon could further increase the risk of flooding and waterborne diseases if immediate action is not taken.

Symbolic Birthday Celebration

Explaining his decision, Nayak said he intentionally chose his birthday for the demonstration because many families in his ward are compelled to celebrate weddings, festivals, and other important occasions amid dirty water and overflowing garbage.

He said the protest was designed to reflect the everyday reality faced by local people and to encourage the administration to address the long-pending civic issue before the rainy season intensifies the situation.

Social Media Responds With Praise and Criticism

The video of the birthday protest quickly spread across social media platforms, attracting thousands of reactions. Many users appreciated the councillor for publicly highlighting the problems faced by residents despite belonging to the ruling party.

Several posts praised his willingness to challenge administrative inaction, while others questioned why repeated complaints had failed to produce visible improvements. Some users pointed out that responsibility appeared to be shifting between departments without any meaningful progress on the ground.

Debate Over Civic Governance

The incident also triggered political discussion online after users noted that Nayak referred to the Swachh Bharat Mission while expressing concern that sanitation efforts were not being effectively implemented in his locality. Others highlighted the irony of a councillor associated with the ruling party protesting against shortcomings within the civic administration.

The protest has also revived conversations about Agra’s Smart City status, with many questioning whether basic urban infrastructure and sanitation issues are receiving adequate attention. As the monsoon season approaches, residents continue to hope that the unusual birthday demonstration will lead to concrete administrative action rather than remaining just another viral moment on social media.
