Afforestation – NCC-Led Plantation Campaign Marks Environment Day in Udhampur
Afforestation – A large-scale tree plantation campaign was carried out in Udhampur district to mark World Environment Day, bringing together government officials, forestry experts, and youth volunteers in a collective effort to strengthen environmental protection and promote ecological sustainability.

The plantation drive was organised by the 1st J&K Air Squadron NCC, Udhampur, at Nagar Van in the Jakhani area. The programme focused on encouraging greener surroundings while spreading awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources for future generations.
Senior Officials Launch the Initiative
The event commenced in the presence of Udhampur Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa, who attended as the chief guest. Demonstrating support for environmental conservation, he planted the first sapling at the site, officially inaugurating the campaign.
Among those present were Commanding Officer of the 1st J&K Air Squadron NCC, Parveen Bishnoi, and Divisional Forest Officer Satyendra Maurya of the Indian Forest Service. Officials and field personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department also participated, offering technical assistance and guidance throughout the plantation activity.
Focus on Expanding Green Cover
Organisers said the programme was designed to increase green cover and encourage community participation in environmental protection efforts. The initiative highlighted the connection between a healthy ecosystem and the well-being of local communities.
Speaking during the event, Commanding Officer Parveen Bishnoi stressed the need to continue the spirit of a green revolution through sustained plantation activities. He noted that around 150 students had joined the campaign and emphasised that planting more trees remains one of the most effective ways to safeguard the planet’s health.
Youth Participation Drives the Campaign
A significant feature of the programme was the enthusiastic involvement of NCC cadets. More than 150 young volunteers actively took part in planting saplings across the Nagar Van area, demonstrating a strong sense of environmental responsibility.
The cadets worked in coordination with forest officials to plant over 150 saplings belonging to different indigenous tree species. Authorities believe that native trees play an important role in maintaining biodiversity, improving air quality, and supporting long-term ecological balance.
Awareness Beyond Tree Plantation
Apart from increasing the number of trees in the region, the campaign also served as an educational platform aimed at encouraging citizens to adopt environmentally responsible practices. Organisers used the occasion to underline the importance of afforestation and urged residents to contribute to green initiatives within their own communities.
Officials stated that public participation remains essential in addressing environmental challenges such as climate change, loss of green cover, and ecological degradation. Through awareness programmes and community engagement, they hope to inspire greater involvement in conservation efforts.
Collaboration for Sustainable Development
The plantation drive reflected a coordinated effort between the NCC and the Jammu and Kashmir Forest Department. Both organisations emphasised the value of collective action in achieving long-term environmental goals.
By combining administrative support, technical expertise, and youth participation, the initiative showcased how community-driven programmes can contribute to environmental sustainability. Organisers expressed confidence that such efforts would help create a healthier and greener future while encouraging citizens to take an active role in protecting the environment.
