ExamFraud –Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday assured strict legal action against those responsible for examination fraud, saying the government would take every possible step to protect students’ futures. His remarks came amid escalating demonstrations across the country over repeated question paper leak allegations, a controversy that has sparked widespread concern among students and opposition parties.

Prime Minister Announces Strong Measures

In a statement shared on social media, the Prime Minister emphasized that the future of young people remains a top priority for the government. He announced plans to establish fast-track courts to ensure speedy trials in cases linked to examination paper leaks and warned that individuals found guilty would face severe punishment.

Modi said that anyone attempting to damage the aspirations of students would be dealt with firmly under the law. The statement marked his first direct response to the ongoing protests that have dominated national attention over the past several days.

Student Demonstrations Continue in the Capital

Thousands of students and supporters gathered in New Delhi on Wednesday under the banner of the social media-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement. The demonstrations later witnessed confrontations between protesters and police near key protest locations, with tensions continuing into the night.

The agitation had intensified earlier in the week after security personnel used tear gas and baton charges to stop demonstrators attempting to march toward Parliament during the opening day of the Monsoon Session. Some protesters reportedly threw stones during the clashes, leading to injuries on both sides.

According to police, at least 178 people, including security personnel, sustained injuries during the violence.

Protest Movement Expands Its Agenda

Although the movement initially focused on alleged examination irregularities, it has gradually widened its demands. Protesters are now raising concerns about unemployment, limited opportunities for young people and broader governance issues.

The CJP first gained public attention in May after comments reportedly made during a court hearing by Chief Justice Surya Kant triggered widespread reactions on social media. What began as an online campaign later evolved into a nationwide youth-led movement addressing multiple public concerns.

Political Pressure Mounts

The protests have become one of the most significant public challenges faced by the Modi government since it secured a third consecutive term in the 2024 general election.

Opposition parties have also intensified their criticism inside Parliament, repeatedly raising the issue during the ongoing session. They have questioned the government’s handling of examination controversies and demanded greater accountability.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of failing to safeguard the country’s education system and alleged that repeated examination scandals had weakened public confidence in recruitment and admission processes.

Police and Protesters Present Different Accounts

Following Wednesday’s demonstrations, representatives of the CJP alleged that police used excessive force against protesters gathered near Jantar Mantar. The group also claimed that internet services were disrupted in certain areas during the operation.

Delhi Police, however, maintained that officers acted after demonstrators allegedly attacked security personnel with stones and plastic bottles. Officials said several police personnel suffered serious injuries during the clashes and defended the measures taken to restore order.

Demonstrations Spread Beyond Delhi

The movement has now expanded beyond the national capital, with protests reported in cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru and Patna. Student groups in different regions have expressed solidarity with the ongoing campaign, reflecting growing public concern over examination integrity.

Support has also emerged outside India. In neighbouring Bangladesh, student organizations announced a torch rally to express solidarity with the protesters in Delhi. The development has drawn attention because Bangladesh witnessed large-scale student-led protests in 2024 that eventually led to major political changes.

Exam Irregularities Fuel Public Concern

Public frustration has grown following several examination-related controversies over the past year. One of the most prominent involved the leak of a medical entrance examination paper, forcing more than two million candidates to appear for the test again.

Another dispute surrounding the online evaluation of examinations taken by nearly two million high school students has further intensified concerns about transparency and fairness in the country’s examination system.
