SchoolSafety –A serious case has emerged from Uttarakhand’s capital, where police have arrested the manager of a private boarding school following allegations of sexual assault made by a student. The incident has raised fresh concerns over child safety in residential educational institutions and prompted calls for strict legal action.

The case surfaced after the student’s parents noticed significant changes in their child’s behaviour over several weeks. According to the complaint filed at Premnagar Police Station in Dehradun, the child had become unusually quiet, avoided conversations, and repeatedly refused to attend school. Believing at first that it was a temporary emotional phase, the family later decided to speak with the child in detail after his condition did not improve.

Child’s Statement Leads to Police Action

During the conversation with his parents, the student reportedly revealed that he had been subjected to sexual abuse by the boarding school’s manager. Deeply distressed by the disclosure, the family immediately approached the police and filed a formal complaint.

Acting swiftly, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and arrested the accused. Investigators have begun collecting evidence while ensuring that all legal procedures related to the case are being followed.

Premnagar Station House Officer Naresh Rathore confirmed that the victim’s statement has been recorded and that the investigation is progressing in accordance with the law. Authorities also conducted the child’s medical examination as part of the investigation. Officials said school documents and other relevant records are being examined to establish the complete sequence of events.

Parents Demand Accountability

The incident has generated widespread concern among parents and local community groups, who have questioned the safety standards maintained at residential schools.

Representatives of parents’ organisations expressed disappointment over the allegations, stating that educational institutions are expected to provide a secure environment where children can study without fear. They urged authorities to ensure a fair investigation and demanded strict legal action if the allegations are proven in court.

Many parents also stressed the importance of stronger monitoring systems, improved child protection policies, and regular oversight of boarding schools to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Earlier Cases Raise Fresh Concerns

The latest arrest has once again drawn attention to previous cases of alleged abuse reported from boarding schools and residential educational institutions in and around Dehradun over the past few years.

One of the most serious cases emerged from the Sahaspur area, where four students were accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl from Delhi. During the investigation, police alleged that efforts had been made to conceal the incident after the victim became pregnant. While three of the accused students were juveniles, several school management officials and staff members were also arrested. A court later sentenced the main accused to life imprisonment, while other members of the institution’s management received prison terms ranging from seven to ten years.

Convictions in Other Residential School Cases

In another case reported in July 2021, a teacher at a boarding school near Dehradun was accused of sexually assaulting a student and threatening her. Police arrested the teacher, and a fast-track court later sentenced him to 20 years in prison. Although the school’s warden was also investigated for allegedly attempting to suppress the complaint, the court acquitted the individual due to insufficient evidence.

A separate investigation involving a school for visually impaired children on Rajpur Road came to light after students reportedly wrote letters describing abuse. Music teacher Suchit Narang was arrested in 2019, and in 2024 a court sentenced him to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Another case involving a residential institution remains under judicial process after a hostel caretaker was arrested on allegations of sexually assaulting two autistic children. The accused continues to remain in judicial custody.
