Industry – A tense calm settled over parts of Noida on Tuesday, a day after violent protests by workers disrupted daily life in Sector-84 and nearby industrial zones. Although the immediate clashes subsided, the aftereffects continue to weigh heavily on both businesses and workers, with uncertainty dominating the atmosphere.
Industrial Activity Hit After Unrest
Several manufacturing units across the affected areas remained closed following the unrest. While some factories had already planned a shutdown due to Ambedkar Jayanti, many others chose to suspend operations as a precaution. In certain cases, the closures have no defined reopening date, adding to the confusion among employees.
Production lines that typically run continuously have come to a sudden halt, leaving both employers and workers in a difficult position. For many companies, the decision to remain shut reflects concerns over safety and the possibility of further disruptions. However, for workers who rely on daily wages, even a short pause in operations can have serious consequences.
Workers Struggle With Uncertainty
Employees across multiple factories said they have not received clear communication from management regarding when work might resume. This lack of information has created anxiety, particularly among those who depend on daily earnings to support their families.
Rashid, originally from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, shared his concerns about the situation. He had moved to Noida from Jaipur earlier this year in search of better job prospects. Working at a factory that produces sports goods, he earns around Rs 540 per day.
From this income, he pays rent of Rs 2,500 and sends money home regularly to support his wife and three children. Since the disruption began, he has not received any updates from his employer about the reopening of the factory. According to him, the silence is making an already difficult situation even more stressful.
Migration for Work Now Feels Risky
Rashid explained that he relocated just a few months ago, hoping for steady employment and improved financial stability. With work now suspended indefinitely, he feels stuck. Returning to his village is not a viable option, as he does not own any farmland or alternative source of income there.
He also pointed out that hundreds of workers—estimated between 800 and 900—in his factory are facing the same uncertainty. The sudden halt in operations has left them without clarity about their immediate future, raising concerns about how they will manage expenses in the coming days.
Widespread Impact on Workforce
Another worker, Girender Kumar, who recently joined a shoe manufacturing unit near Sector-84, expressed disappointment over the situation. Having arrived in Noida only last month, he had hoped to build a stable livelihood.
Kumar strongly criticized the violence that triggered the disruption. He said such incidents only worsen the challenges faced by workers who are already struggling to meet basic needs. According to him, the unrest has not only affected factory operations but also shaken the confidence of workers who migrate to cities in search of better opportunities.
Economic Pressure Builds on Daily Earners
The ongoing shutdown has highlighted the fragile nature of employment for daily wage workers in industrial areas. Without regular income, even a few days of halted work can push families into financial distress. Many workers said they are now relying on savings or borrowing from friends to manage essential expenses.
At the same time, factory owners are also assessing losses caused by halted production and potential damage during the unrest. The situation presents a dual challenge—ensuring worker safety while trying to resume operations as soon as possible.
Uncertain Road Ahead
While the immediate violence has subsided, the long-term impact on workers and businesses remains unclear. Much will depend on how quickly factories can safely reopen and restore normal operations. For now, thousands of workers continue to wait for updates, hoping for a swift return to work and stability.
