NewsPolitics – Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday called on opposition parties to clarify their position on the Women’s Reservation Bill, urging them to participate in discussions during a special one-day session of the state assembly. He said parties such as the Samajwadi Party and the Congress should explain why they did not support the constitutional amendment linked to the law in Parliament.
Call for Participation in Assembly Debate
Speaking ahead of the session, Adityanath stressed the importance of open discussion on the issue. He noted that the state government intends to deliberate on multiple topics, including the introduction of the constitutional amendment bill by the central government to operationalise the Women’s Reservation Law.
He appealed to legislators across party lines to join the debate and present their views. According to him, the assembly session provides an opportunity for opposition parties to address questions surrounding their stance and engage constructively on matters related to women’s representation.
Questions Raised Over Opposition’s Stand
The chief minister specifically questioned why the Samajwadi Party and the Congress did not back the bill in the Lok Sabha. He said that if members of these parties believe their leadership made an error, they should acknowledge it publicly.
Adityanath added that the session would also include a motion criticising those parties that did not support the amendment. He suggested that opposition legislators could either defend their position or support the motion if they reconsider their earlier stand.
Strong Criticism of Political Rivals
During his remarks, Adityanath accused the Samajwadi Party of having a poor track record on issues concerning women’s safety and empowerment. He alleged that the party had failed to create a sense of security for women during its time in power.
He also claimed that both the Samajwadi Party and the Congress had an opportunity to improve their image by supporting the legislation aimed at increasing women’s participation in governance. According to him, their decision not to do so has raised concerns about their commitment to gender representation.
Focus on Women’s Reservation Law
The Women’s Reservation Law, often referred to as a significant step toward increasing women’s representation in legislative bodies, has been a key point of political debate. The central government introduced the constitutional amendment to enable its implementation, but it faced resistance from several opposition parties during parliamentary proceedings.
Adityanath argued that supporting such legislation would have demonstrated a collective commitment to empowering women in public life. He expressed disappointment that consensus could not be achieved at the national level.
