USA Take Control in an Energetic Opening

Bosnia and Herzegovina earned an early corner but were unable to turn it into a meaningful chance. The United States gradually settled into the contest, using quick passing and wide movement to put pressure on the Bosnian defence.

Christian Pulisic and Balogun were involved in several promising attacks during the first half. Bosnia also tested the USA goalkeeper in the eighth minute, but the effort was dealt with safely.

Balogun thought he had put his side ahead in the 31st minute, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. The decision briefly slowed the American momentum, but the forward continued to trouble Bosnia with his movement inside the penalty area.

Balogun Breaks the Deadlock Before Half-Time

The breakthrough arrived in the 45th minute. Sergino Dest delivered the ball into the attacking area, where it took a slight deflection off defender Muharemovic before reaching Balogun. The USA striker reacted quickly and drove his finish past Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.

The goal was Balogun’s third of the tournament in his first World Cup appearance. It also placed him among the small group of USA players to have scored three times in a single World Cup campaign.

Balogun nearly added another goal moments later when his effort struck the crossbar. By the interval, the United States had enjoyed more than 62 per cent possession and repeatedly found space in the Bosnia half. Their sharp attacking play resulted in 19 touches inside the opposition box, with Balogun responsible for 14 of them.

Bosnia Make Changes After the Break

Bosnia and Herzegovina made three substitutions at the start of the second half as they looked for a way back into the game. Veteran forward Edin Dzeko appeared uncomfortable while pressing and was seen holding his thigh during the early stages after the restart.

The Bosnian side had more of the ball for a short spell but struggled to create clear openings. A long-range attempt from Katic from around 40 yards did not trouble the USA defence.

Red Card Changes the Closing Stages

The match took a difficult turn in the 61st minute when Balogun and Muharemovic became involved in a heavy challenge. Muharemovic went down after contact to his ankle, and the referee showed Balogun a red card following the incident.

Balogun’s dismissal left the United States with 10 players for the final half-hour. Bosnia attempted to take advantage of their numerical superiority, but the American defence remained organised and limited their opponents’ attacking opportunities.

Tillman Secures USA Victory

Despite being reduced to 10 men, the United States extended their lead in the 82nd minute. Malik Tillman found the net to make it 2-0, giving his team a decisive cushion in the closing minutes.

Bosnia and Herzegovina were unable to produce a late response, and the United States saw out the match without further damage. The result sends the USA into the round of 16, where Belgium will provide their next major test in the World Cup knockout phase
