Infrastructure –Flash floods that recently struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district have severely disrupted daily life, with extensive damage reported to both water supply systems and electricity infrastructure. The flooding also forced water into several residential areas, creating additional challenges for local families as authorities continue emergency response and restoration efforts.

Water Supply Network Faces Heavy Damage

Officials from the Jal Shakti Department said the sudden flooding caused widespread destruction to key drinking water sources throughout the district. Executive Engineer Zulafqar Ali explained that several dug wells, pump wells, and borewells were either damaged or rendered unusable after being affected by the overflowing water. The department is currently carrying out inspections to determine the full extent of the losses while working to restore safe drinking water for affected communities.

Ali said emergency measures have already been introduced to support residents whose homes and neighborhoods were impacted by floodwaters. Water storage tanks have been installed at selected locations, and temporary pipelines are being laid to ensure households continue receiving water for drinking and other essential domestic purposes. Officials added that assessment teams remain on the ground and will continue evaluating the condition of the damaged infrastructure before permanent repair work begins.

Emergency Arrangements for Residents

As floodwater entered residential areas, district authorities moved quickly to reduce hardships faced by local families. Temporary water distribution systems have been activated in the worst-affected locations to maintain access to clean water while damaged facilities are repaired.

The administration stated that restoring essential public services remains one of its highest priorities. Teams from multiple departments are coordinating their efforts to improve the situation as quickly as possible while monitoring conditions across vulnerable areas. Officials also continue to review the impact of the floods to identify locations requiring additional assistance.

Electricity Restoration Continues Across the District

The recent flooding also caused major disruptions to the electricity network in Rajouri. According to the Power Development Department, around 15 electrical transformers were completely washed away, while nearly 200 additional transformers sustained varying levels of damage during the disaster. The damage resulted in widespread power outages across several parts of the district.

Executive Engineer Javed Akhtar said restoration work is progressing on a priority basis. Electricity has already been restored in several affected localities, while repair crews continue working in remaining areas where infrastructure suffered more extensive damage. Department officials said technical teams are being deployed continuously to reconnect consumers and stabilize the power supply.

Heavy Rain Triggered Flood Emergency

The flash floods followed intense rainfall that began early on July 21, leading to rapidly rising water levels across Rajouri district. Anticipating possible flooding, landslides, and waterlogging, the district administration and Rajouri Police issued public advisories urging residents to remain vigilant throughout the period of heavy rain.

Authorities advised people to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improved. Residents were also instructed to stay away from rivers, streams, and other flood-prone locations where water levels could rise without warning. Officials further cautioned against attempting to cross submerged roads or bridges, emphasizing that such actions could place lives at serious risk.

The administration has continued encouraging the public to closely follow official weather updates and comply with safety instructions issued by government agencies. Restoration of damaged infrastructure and continued monitoring of vulnerable areas remain ongoing as officials work to restore normal services and reduce the impact of the recent floods on local communities.
