RoadAccident –A devastating road accident in Mumbai’s Mahim claimed two lives on Monday night, leaving two families in deep mourning. A 46-year-old woman, who was preparing to leave with her family for a Guru Purnima pilgrimage, and a 21-year-old motorcyclist both lost their lives after a high-speed collision on Lady Jamshedji Road.
Woman Dies Hours Before Religious Journey
According to the Mahim Police, the accident took place at around 9:30 pm when Mangala Ashok Tandel was crossing Lady Jamshedji Road. Investigators said a sports motorcycle travelling at high speed struck her with significant force. The collision reportedly dragged her for nearly 100 metres before the motorcycle came to a halt.
Emergency responders rushed Tandel to Raheja Hospital, but doctors declared her dead before treatment could begin. The sudden loss has left her family and neighbours in shock, especially as she had been making final preparations for a religious trip that was scheduled to begin later that night.
Pilgrimage Plans End in Heartbreak
Mangala Tandel, who lived in the Mahim Causeway area, had packed her belongings for a family visit to the Shri Swami Samarth Mutt in Akkalkot, Solapur, to mark Guru Purnima. Police said she had stepped outside her residence to contact relatives who were expected to travel with the family when the fatal incident occurred.
She is survived by her husband, who works for a nationalised bank, and their two daughters, aged 22 and 20. What was meant to be a spiritual occasion quickly turned into an overwhelming personal tragedy, with family members forced to cancel their journey and instead cope with an unexpected loss.
Young Motorcyclist Also Succumbs to Injuries
The motorcycle rider, identified as 21-year-old Dhruv Gurav from Mahim’s Fishermen Colony, also sustained critical injuries in the crash. Police said he had reportedly been on his way to Bandra to pick up his mother when the accident took place.
He was taken to Bhabha Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Authorities said Gurav belonged to a family known in local music circles. His parents had previously performed with orchestra groups before later shifting to stage performances and other live events as the popularity of orchestras declined.
The deaths of both Tandel and Gurav have left their respective families grieving, with the accident bringing sorrow to two households within moments.
Police Continue Probe Into Fatal Collision
Investigators said Gurav and his elder brother were enthusiastic about high-performance motorcycles, and their family owned multiple sports bikes. Police also stated that Gurav had been involved in a previous road accident, although officials have not linked that incident to the present investigation.
Mahim Police have registered a case under Sections 106, relating to causing death by negligence, and 281, concerning negligent driving or riding on a public road, of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act have also been invoked as part of the legal process.
Officials are examining all available evidence, including witness accounts and other forensic details, to establish the precise sequence of events that led to the fatal crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to determine whether additional factors contributed to the incident.
