Animal Welfare – Delhi Begins Work on Modern Stray Dog Shelter in Dwarka
Animal Welfare –Delhi has taken another step towards strengthening its animal welfare framework with the launch of a modern shelter dedicated to the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of stray dogs.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday inaugurated the construction of a new dog shelter by laying the foundation stone at Sector 29 in Dwarka. The project, being developed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), was launched in the presence of Mayor Pravesh Wahi, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, and senior civic officials. The upcoming facility is intended to provide improved living conditions, medical support, and rehabilitation services for stray dogs while promoting humane animal care across the national capital.
Modern Facility Planned for Stray Dogs
The shelter will cover nearly 6,050 square metres and is being designed with modern infrastructure to accommodate rescued and stray dogs in a safe environment. According to officials, the centre will focus on providing proper shelter, veterinary care, rehabilitation, and overall welfare for animals that require protection or treatment. The project is expected to improve the city’s capacity to address stray animal management through scientific and compassionate methods.
CSR Support Reduces Financial Burden
Speaking during the ceremony, the Lieutenant Governor described the initiative as an example of successful cooperation between the public and private sectors. He said the shelter is being built without placing any financial burden on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, as the entire project is being supported through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding provided by the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation.
Sandhu appreciated the foundation for extending financial assistance for the project and said such partnerships allow important public welfare initiatives to move forward while making effective use of private sector resources. He added that collaborative efforts of this nature can strengthen the city’s commitment to responsible and compassionate governance.
Inclusive Planning Recommended
The Lieutenant Governor stressed that the future management of the shelter should involve a wide range of stakeholders to ensure effective operations. He suggested that animal welfare groups, resident welfare associations (RWAs), dog caregivers, veterinarians, and subject experts should all contribute to developing the operational strategy.
According to him, combining professional expertise with practical experience from organisations working closely with animals will help maintain high standards of care. He also underlined the importance of adopting scientific practices alongside humane treatment in managing the facility.
Model for Future Animal Welfare Projects
Officials believe the Dwarka shelter could become a benchmark for similar projects across Delhi. The facility is expected to reflect a more organised and compassionate approach to stray animal welfare, supporting the city’s broader efforts to improve civic infrastructure while ensuring the well-being of vulnerable animals.
They noted that urban development should not be measured solely through roads, buildings, or transport systems, but also by how responsibly cities care for those who cannot speak for themselves. Initiatives like this, they said, demonstrate that animal welfare remains an important part of sustainable urban governance.
Visit to Small Animal Cremation Centre
During his visit to Dwarka, the Lieutenant Governor also reviewed the functioning of Delhi’s only cremation centre dedicated to small animals. He inspected the available facilities and discussed ways to further improve services for pet owners and animal welfare organisations.
Reiterating the need for expert participation, Sandhu said the involvement of veterinarians, NGOs, and animal welfare specialists would help ensure that both the upcoming shelter and the existing cremation facility continue to operate with compassion, professionalism, and respect for animal life.
