Traffic Disruption – Heavy Rain Triggers Severe Congestion Across Delhi-NCR Roads
Traffic Disruption –Heavy rainfall across Delhi and nearby NCR regions on Tuesday led to widespread traffic congestion, waterlogged roads, and disruptions in power supply, making daily travel difficult for thousands of commuters.
Heavy showers that swept across Delhi on Tuesday significantly affected normal life as several major roads witnessed long traffic queues, water accumulation, and fallen trees. The adverse weather slowed vehicle movement across the city, while power interruptions were also reported in several localities, adding to the challenges faced by residents during peak travel hours.
Major Roads Witness Hours of Traffic Delays
Traffic movement remained heavily affected on several important routes, with congestion reported from Greater Kailash-II to Savitri Cinema, Chirag Dilli, Hauz Khas, RK Puram, and the Sangam Vihar-Khanpur stretch through MB Road. Similar conditions were seen on NH-8 near Shankar Vihar, Zakir Hussain Road, the Delhi Cantt-Naraina Flyover-Mayapuri corridor, ITO, Old Rohtak Road, Madhuban Chowk-Netaji Subhash Place, Peeragarhi, NH-48 near AIIMS, Delhi-Noida Road, Kalindi Kunj, and Vikas Marg.
The combination of continuous rainfall and poor drainage resulted in waterlogging at multiple locations, reducing vehicle speed and causing traffic to build up throughout the day.
Border Areas Face Heavy Vehicle Build-Up
One of the most affected locations was NH-09 near the Ghazipur Border, also known as the UP Gate, where vehicles moved slowly for extended periods. Additional congestion was recorded in Azadpur, Malviya Nagar, Prahladpur, and Kalindi Kunj as traffic volumes increased during the rainy conditions.
Authorities advised motorists to remain cautious while travelling through low-lying areas where rainwater had accumulated, leading to slower movement and extended travel times.
Commuters Describe Difficult Journey
Many residents experienced unusually long commutes because of the weather. East Delhi resident Nikhil Kumar said his journey towards south Delhi became much longer than expected after traffic slowed at several major junctions.
According to Kumar, congestion first intensified around Anand Vihar, one of the city’s busiest transport hubs. Conditions became even more difficult near Ghazipur, where waterlogging brought traffic close to a standstill. He also noted that vehicles moved very slowly near Sarai Kale Khan, further extending his travel time.
Delhi-NCR Connectivity Also Impacted
The rainfall affected not only Delhi but also neighbouring NCR cities. Commuters travelling from Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram into the national capital encountered major delays as flooded roads reduced traffic flow on key connecting routes.
In Gurugram, several videos shared on social media showed roads submerged under rainwater, with vehicles navigating through flooded stretches. Water accumulation was reported in areas including Sikanderpur, IFFCO Chowk, Ashoka Marg in Sushant Lok Phase 1, and the road connecting Millennium City Centre Metro Station with Bakhtawar Chowk.
Gurugram-Delhi Corridor Sees Slow Movement
Traffic was also severely affected near the Sirhaul border, a crucial link between Delhi and Gurugram. Vehicles were seen moving at a very slow pace on both carriageways as rainwater and heavy traffic combined to create long queues throughout the corridor.
With intermittent rainfall continuing during the day, commuters across Delhi-NCR were advised to allow additional travel time, monitor traffic advisories, and avoid waterlogged routes wherever possible until conditions improved.
