World Cup – USA Defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina to Reach Last 16
World Cup – The United States secured a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, booking their place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Goals from Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman helped the co-hosts overcome a difficult contest and continue their campaign on home soil.

Late First-Half Goal Gives USA the Lead
The match remained tight for much of the opening half, with Bosnia and Herzegovina proving difficult to break down. Balogun had an early effort ruled out after an offside decision in the build-up, but the forward remained a constant threat in attack.
Just before the interval, Balogun found the breakthrough. He collected a pass from Tillman and benefited from two deflections before finishing calmly beneath goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. The goal gave the USA a valuable advantage after a closely contested first half.
Balogun nearly added another goal in first-half stoppage time, but his effort from close range struck the crossbar. The USA entered the break with the lead, although Bosnia and Herzegovina remained within reach of the match.
VAR Decision Changes the Course of the Match
Bosnia and Herzegovina gained a major opportunity in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a red card following a VAR review. The decision came after a challenge involving Tarik Muharemovic, leaving the United States with 10 players for the final half-hour.
The dismissal increased pressure on the American defence, as Bosnia and Herzegovina attempted to use their numerical advantage to find an equaliser. USA goalkeeper and defenders were required to remain organised as the opposition pushed forward.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, the hosts continued to show discipline and patience. Their defensive effort prevented Bosnia and Herzegovina from creating a clear route back into the game.
Tillman Free-Kick Secures Knockout Victory
The USA eventually sealed the result through Tillman, who scored from a free-kick late in the match. His goal came shortly after Christian Pulisic had a strike ruled out for offside, adding further drama to the closing stages.
Tillman’s finish ensured that Bosnia and Herzegovina could not mount a late comeback. The final whistle confirmed a significant knockout-stage win for the United States, who will now face Belgium in the Round of 16.
USA Set for Belgium Test in Seattle
The result ended the USA’s 12-match winless run against European teams and marked another important step in the team’s World Cup progress. It was also the country’s second victory in a World Cup knockout match.
Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, the United States have now reached the Round of 16 in each of their last four World Cup appearances. The team will meet Belgium at Seattle Stadium on July 7, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
A victory against Belgium would send the USA into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002. It would also represent one of the strongest achievements for the national team in the modern World Cup era.
