Folarin Balogun – FIFA Lifts Ban Ahead of USA’s Belgium Clash

Folarin Balogun –  The United States will have Folarin Balogun available for its FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match against Belgium on Tuesday after FIFA placed his automatic suspension on hold. The decision means the forward, currently the USA’s leading scorer in the tournament, can be considered for selection despite his red card in the previous round.

FIFA Suspends Automatic Match Ban

Balogun had been expected to miss the Belgium fixture after being sent off during the USA’s Round of 32 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina. The striker was dismissed following a foul on defender Tarik Muharemovic, triggering what is usually an automatic one-match suspension under tournament rules.

US Soccer said FIFA had acted under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which allows its judicial bodies to suspend the implementation of certain disciplinary sanctions. The governing body has reportedly placed the punishment under a one-year probationary period rather than requiring Balogun to sit out the next match.

According to FIFA’s decision, the suspended ban could still be activated if Balogun is involved in another offence of similar seriousness during the probation period. In that case, the original sanction would be enforced in addition to any punishment issued for a new incident.

USA Receive Major Boost Before Knockout Match

Balogun’s availability is a significant development for the US Men’s National Team as it prepares for a demanding knockout tie against Belgium. He has been one of the key attacking players for the Americans during the tournament and leads the side’s scoring chart at the World Cup.

The United States had initially been preparing for the possibility of facing Belgium without him. FIFA’s ruling now gives the coaching staff another attacking option as the team looks to reach the quarter-finals.

The decision has also drawn attention because red-card suspensions are generally applied immediately in World Cup competition. FIFA, however, appears to have used its disciplinary authority to treat Balogun’s case differently under the provisions available in its code.

Belgium Federation Questions FIFA Decision

The Royal Belgian Football Association has publicly criticised FIFA’s ruling and said it was surprised that Balogun had been declared eligible for the match. The federation said it was reviewing possible responses to the decision.

In its statement, the RBFA acknowledged that FIFA had referred to Article 27 of the disciplinary code. However, it argued that another section of the same code, Article 66.4, states that a player sent off should automatically be suspended for the team’s next match.

Belgium’s football body also pointed to Article 10.5 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Competition Regulations. That provision says a player or team official dismissed after a direct red card or a second yellow card must automatically miss the following match, with further sanctions possible.

The RBFA said the automatic suspension rule had been applied in other red-card cases during the tournament. It also referred to FIFA World Cup 2026 Circular No. 16, which was sent to participating member associations on May 12, 2026, and reportedly restated the same principle.

RBFA Considers Further Action

Belgium’s federation said it was examining all available options in order to protect the rights of participating teams and uphold fair-play standards. It did not specify whether it planned to lodge a formal protest before the USA-Belgium match.

FIFA has not indicated that its decision will be reconsidered. Unless there is a further ruling, Balogun remains eligible to feature for the United States in Tuesday’s Round of 16 contest.
