Weather – Delhi Faces Intense Heat as Storms Promise Partial Relief Ahead

Weather – New Delhi continued to experience harsh summer conditions on Monday, with temperatures climbing above 42 degrees Celsius and making outdoor activity difficult for residents. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for heatwave conditions during the early part of the day, warning people to take precautions against prolonged exposure to extreme heat.

Changing Weather Signals Possible Relief

Despite the intense daytime heat, there are early signs of relief. Weather experts indicate that a shift in atmospheric conditions could bring down temperatures over the next few days. By Monday evening, parts of the capital witnessed strong winds and dust storms, signaling a transition in weather patterns. The IMD subsequently extended a yellow alert for thunderstorms and rainfall, suggesting light to moderate showers accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.

Forecast for Coming Days

The weather department has predicted that Tuesday will see temperatures ranging between 28 and 42 degrees Celsius. While the heat is expected to persist during the day, thunderstorms and rainfall may offer some comfort later. A specific yellow alert has been issued for April 29, highlighting the likelihood of changing conditions throughout the day.

According to meteorologists, a cyclonic circulation currently affecting regions including central Pakistan, northwest Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana is gradually moving towards northern India. This system is expected to influence Delhi’s weather, bringing rain and thunderstorms that could continue until April 30. The rainfall is likely to be part of early pre-monsoon activity, which typically brings temporary cooling.

Impact of High Temperatures

Residents across Delhi reported significant discomfort as temperatures remained well above normal levels. On Monday, Safdarjung, considered the city’s primary weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 42.3 degrees Celsius—more than 3 degrees above the seasonal average. Similar readings were observed in other areas, with Palam and Lodhi Road also crossing the 42-degree mark.

Minimum temperatures remained higher than usual as well. Lodhi Road recorded 23.6 degrees Celsius, while Ridge and Ayanagar reported slightly elevated night temperatures compared to seasonal norms. These consistently high readings have contributed to prolonged discomfort, especially during nighttime hours when cooling is expected.

Dust Storms and Strong Winds Expected

As the cyclonic system moves closer, strong winds are likely to accompany rainfall. Experts warn that these winds may trigger dust storms in several parts of the city. While such conditions may reduce temperatures temporarily, they can also lead to reduced visibility and minor disruptions.

Authorities have categorized the expected rainfall as moderate, with possible thunderstorms. This pattern is typical of pre-monsoon weather and often brings short-term relief from extreme heat, though temperatures may remain above average overall.

Advisory and Safety Measures

In light of the changing weather, officials have urged residents to remain cautious. People are advised not to take shelter under trees during storms and to avoid standing near concrete structures, water bodies, or electrical installations. Disconnecting electronic devices during thunderstorms is also recommended as a precaution.

Civic authorities have taken steps to minimize risks. Arrangements such as free drinking water and oral rehydration solution counters are being planned near public transport points. Workers engaged in sanitation and construction activities are being advised to follow safety protocols during extreme heat and storm conditions.

Emergency services, including fire, power, and water departments, have been placed on alert to ensure uninterrupted services during adverse weather. Hospitals and healthcare centers have also been instructed to remain prepared with essential medicines and emergency support systems.

Air Quality Remains Moderate

Amid the fluctuating weather, Delhi’s air quality has remained in the moderate category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 197. While not severe, the level still calls for caution among sensitive groups, particularly those with respiratory conditions.

As the city navigates between extreme heat and approaching storms, residents are advised to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
