Cricket –  The fifth edition of the Andhra Premier League (APL) is set to begin on June 9, with organisers introducing an expanded format aimed at taking the game to more regions across Andhra Pradesh. The month-long competition will run until June 30 and is expected to provide a valuable platform for promising cricketers from the state to showcase their abilities.

League Expansion Aims to Broaden Cricket’s Reach

Speaking at a media interaction held at the Andhra Cricket Association headquarters in Vijayawada on Sunday, ACA President and Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath, popularly known as Chinni, said extensive preparations had been completed to ensure the successful conduct of the tournament. He stated that the league has been designed not only to strengthen cricket at the grassroots level but also to create a competitive environment for emerging players.

According to him, the 2026 edition represents an important step forward in Andhra Pradesh’s cricketing journey. The tournament is expected to help identify and nurture talented youngsters while contributing to the overall growth of the sport across the state.

Matches Scheduled Across Three Cities

In a significant departure from previous seasons, this year’s league will be staged across three different venues. Organisers believe the move will help spread cricketing activity beyond a single centre and encourage greater participation from various regions.

Seven teams will compete in the tournament. The opening phase of matches will take place in Visakhapatnam from June 9 to June 14. The action will then shift to Kadapa, where games are scheduled between June 17 and June 21. The final leg of the competition will be hosted in Mangalagiri from June 24 to June 30. Both semi-final matches and the championship final will also be played in Mangalagiri.

Focus Remains on Local Cricket Talent

The Andhra Cricket Association has placed special emphasis on providing opportunities for players from within the state. Chinni noted that one of the league’s primary objectives is to help Andhra Pradesh cricketers progress to higher levels of the game, including national representation.

He highlighted the recent selection of Guntur cricketer Rasheed to the India-A squad as an example of the positive results emerging from the state’s cricket development efforts. Such achievements, he said, demonstrate that local players are increasingly finding pathways to compete on bigger stages.

Building Andhra Pradesh as a Cricket Hub

Officials believe that the Andhra Premier League can play a key role in strengthening the state’s cricket infrastructure and reputation. By hosting matches across multiple cities and creating opportunities for young players, the tournament is expected to contribute to long-term sporting growth.

With preparations completed and teams ready to begin their campaigns, organisers are hopeful that the 2026 season will further enhance Andhra Pradesh’s standing in Indian cricket while inspiring the next generation of players to pursue the sport at a professional level.
