Traffic – Holiday Rush Triggers Severe Congestion on Mumbai Pune Expressway
Traffic – A sharp surge in vehicles travelling from Mumbai to Pune created major traffic disruptions on Friday morning, as a long weekend and the start of the summer vacation period coincided. The sudden spike in traffic volume led to slow movement across large stretches of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, leaving thousands of commuters stuck for extended periods.
Heavy Rush Strains Traffic Systems
From early hours, the expressway witnessed an unusually high number of private vehicles and buses heading towards Pune. Authorities struggled to manage the growing traffic load, particularly as multiple lanes had been restricted due to arrangements linked to the inauguration of the Missing Link project. With limited road space available, bottlenecks quickly formed, worsening the situation as the day progressed.
Police personnel had been deployed at key points along the route to manage the flow of vehicles. However, the scale of congestion made it difficult to maintain smooth movement. Commuters reported that vehicles were moving at a very slow pace, especially near toll plazas and sections where lane closures were in effect.
Toll Waiver Ordered Amid Gridlock
As reports of the worsening traffic reached senior officials, immediate steps were taken to ease the situation. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who was travelling to the event location by helicopter, observed the traffic congestion from above. Following this, he directed authorities to temporarily suspend toll collection at plazas to help clear the backlog of vehicles.
Officials were also instructed to ensure that vehicles could pass through without delays and that police personnel closely monitored the implementation of these orders. The decision aimed to reduce waiting time at toll booths, which had become one of the major choke points contributing to the traffic jam.
Vehicle Breakdowns Add to Delays
The situation was further complicated by several vehicles breaking down along the route. This was particularly noticeable in the ghat section, where steep inclines combined with high afternoon temperatures caused engines to overheat. These incidents led to additional slowdowns, as stranded vehicles blocked parts of the roadway.
Long lines of vehicles stretched across several kilometers, with many travellers reporting delays lasting several hours. The combination of heavy traffic, lane restrictions, and vehicle breakdowns created a challenging situation for both commuters and traffic authorities.
Commuters Question Event Planning
Many travellers expressed frustration over the timing of the Missing Link project inauguration, which was scheduled for early afternoon. According to commuters, organizing such an event during a peak travel period contributed significantly to the congestion.
Several passengers suggested that the event could have been planned either earlier in the day or on a less busy date to minimize disruption. They argued that better coordination between event planning and traffic management could have prevented the large-scale inconvenience faced by the public.

The incident has once again highlighted the need for improved planning during high-traffic periods, especially on critical routes like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.
