Extradition – Centre Says US Has Not Sought Punjab Cop’s Extradition
Extradition – The Union government has said that it has not received any formal request from the United States for the extradition of Punjab Police officer Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, whose name figured in allegations made by US authorities in connection with an alleged cross-border extortion conspiracy.
Government Responds to Lok Sabha Question
The clarification was given in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh while responding to a question raised by Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
According to the minister’s response, the Indian government became aware of the allegations after the US Department of Justice held a press briefing on July 7 concerning a law enforcement operation called “Operation Hard Ball” and announced related federal indictments.
US authorities had alleged that individuals associated with the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria transnational criminal syndicate were involved in an extortion conspiracy that also allegedly included a Punjab Police officer.
No Extradition Request Received So Far
The government’s response specifically stated that no request seeking the extradition of Nagra has been received from US authorities to date.
The statement is significant because the allegations against the officer were made publicly by US Justice Department officials in connection with an investigation into an alleged criminal network operating across borders. However, the Centre has made it clear that there is currently no extradition request before the Indian government in relation to the officer.
Punjab Police Took Action Against Officer
The Lok Sabha reply also referred to action taken by the Punjab Police after the allegations came to light.
A July 8 statement from the Office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jalandhar Range, said that the officer had been removed from his position as Station House Officer of Police Station Tanda. The government further stated that he was subsequently arrested on July 17 after an investigation and that departmental proceedings had also been initiated against him.
These steps were taken at the state level following the allegations and the subsequent investigation into the officer’s alleged role.
US Allegations Involved $400,000 Extortion Claim
The case had drawn attention after senior officials of the US Justice Department alleged that the Punjab Police officer had worked with members of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria syndicate as part of an alleged extortion plan.
According to the allegations made by US authorities, the group sought to obtain $400,000 from a US-based family of Indian origin. The family was allegedly threatened with the implication of their relatives in a fabricated murder case in Punjab if the money was not paid.
The allegations form part of the US investigation and indictments announced in connection with “Operation Hard Ball.” The Indian government’s latest response does not confirm the allegations but records the action taken by Punjab authorities and clarifies the status of any extradition request.
Centre’s Clarification Comes Amid Ongoing Case
The Centre’s statement provides a formal update on the diplomatic aspect of the matter. While the allegations originated from the US investigation, the officer has also faced action in India, including arrest and departmental proceedings.
As of the government’s response in Parliament, there was no request from Washington seeking his extradition. Any future extradition process, if initiated by US authorities, would be a separate matter requiring consideration under the applicable legal and diplomatic procedures.
