Traffic Enforcement –Delhi traffic management remains a key focus as Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu directs officials to strengthen enforcement, reduce congestion and maintain smoother movement on major roads during the monsoon.
Lieutenant Governor Reviews Traffic Management
Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday instructed the traffic police to follow a zero-tolerance policy against traffic violations and indiscipline. He said maintaining steady movement on Delhi roads should remain a priority and made it clear that weak or inconsistent enforcement would not be acceptable.
Sandhu issued the directions during a review meeting attended by the police commissioner and senior traffic officials. The meeting also examined progress on instructions given during an earlier review held on June 29.
Focus on Enforcement and Monsoon Congestion
Officials discussed measures being taken to manage traffic, improve enforcement and deal with congestion during the monsoon season. The Lieutenant Governor reviewed the response of various departments and sought continued coordination to address problems affecting commuters.
The Public Works Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi and Irrigation and Flood Control Department reported an improvement in waterlogging conditions across the city. According to officials, 65 areas have been affected by waterlogging this monsoon, compared with 194 in 2024 and 169 in 2025.
Waterlogging Hotspots Fall Sharply
The number of identified waterlogging hotspots has also declined significantly. Officials said the figure has fallen to 20 this year, compared with 53 recorded in each of the previous two years.
The improvement has coincided with a reduction in complaints related to traffic congestion. Data reviewed at the meeting showed that calls received through the traffic congestion helpline fell to 572 in July 2026, from 701 during the corresponding month last year.
Traffic-related complaints posted through social media also declined. Such complaints fell from 1,792 in July 2025 to 1,653 in July 2026, according to the figures presented during the review.
Kanwar Yatra and Independence Day Arrangements
The meeting also covered traffic arrangements for the Kanwar Yatra and the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. Officials reviewed preparations intended to manage increased movement and maintain road safety during the events.
Authorities also highlighted the use of digital navigation platforms to provide motorists with more timely information about road conditions. Real-time traffic alerts, speed-limit details and information about accident-prone areas have been integrated into navigation services through coordination with Google Maps and MapMyIndia.
Digital Alerts to Help Road Users
The integration is aimed at giving commuters advance information about potentially risky locations and changing traffic conditions. Officials said such alerts can help road users plan routes more effectively and remain cautious in areas where traffic risks are higher.
The Lieutenant Governor’s review comes as Delhi continues to deal with seasonal traffic pressures and changing road conditions during the monsoon. The administration is expected to maintain coordination among traffic police and civic agencies to address congestion, waterlogging and other factors that can disrupt movement across the capital.
