Rural- The Government of India is set to bring together policymakers, state representatives and experts in New Delhi for a comprehensive discussion aimed at strengthening rural development and improving the implementation of key welfare programmes across the country.

The Centre will host the inaugural Rashtriya Gramin Vikas Sammelan in New Delhi on June 28 and 29, marking the first national-level conference dedicated exclusively to rural development planning and governance. Organised by the Ministry of Rural Development, the two-day event is expected to provide a common platform for reviewing ongoing initiatives, sharing successful models and outlining long-term priorities for the development of villages across India.
National Leaders and State Representatives to Participate
Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will lead the conference, which will be attended by rural development ministers from various states and Union Territories. Senior government officials, policy planners, administrators and subject experts are also scheduled to take part in discussions aimed at improving coordination between the Centre and states.
The conference will take place at the Bharat Ratna C. Subramaniam Auditorium in Pusa, New Delhi. According to the ministry, the central theme of this year’s gathering is “Viksit Gram, Viksit Bharat,” highlighting the importance of strengthening village-level planning while ensuring that development funds and public resources are used effectively.
Review of Major Rural Welfare Programmes
One of the key objectives of the summit will be to assess the implementation and progress of flagship rural development schemes currently being executed across the country. Officials will review programmes such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission, rural skill development initiatives and the National Social Assistance Programme.
Separate thematic sessions have been planned to evaluate rural housing projects, road connectivity, livelihood generation, employment-oriented skill training and social security measures. The discussions are expected to identify existing challenges while exploring practical solutions that can improve delivery at the grassroots level.
Focus on Local Planning and Best Practices
Another important aspect of the conclave will be strengthening development planning through Gram Panchayats. Officials are expected to exchange ideas on improving local governance, enhancing administrative efficiency and ensuring that village institutions play a greater role in implementing government programmes.
The ministry has also indicated that states will present successful rural development models and innovative governance practices. These examples will be examined for possible adoption in other regions, allowing effective initiatives to be replicated wherever suitable.
Women’s Economic Empowerment on the Agenda
Women’s financial independence and participation in rural economic activities will receive special attention during the conference. Discussions will include the progress of the Lakhpati Didi initiative, which encourages women associated with self-help groups to increase their household income through entrepreneurship and livelihood opportunities.
Officials are expected to deliberate on ways to expand such initiatives while integrating them with existing welfare programmes. The overall objective of the summit is to prepare a practical roadmap that supports inclusive rural growth, improves living standards and strengthens sustainable development across villages in the years ahead.
