Politics – Dhami Defends Electoral Roll Verification Drive in Uttarakhand
Politics – Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday strongly defended the ongoing voter list verification campaign in the state, saying the exercise is aimed at ensuring fair and transparent elections while identifying fake entries in electoral rolls.
The Chief Minister made the remarks while addressing a training program organized under the Pt Deendayal Upadhyay Abhiyan in Champawat. During his speech, Dhami also issued a firm warning against individuals or groups allegedly attempting to engage in religious conversion activities or disturb communal harmony in the hill state.
Opposition Criticised Over Voter Verification Campaign
Speaking at the event, Dhami accused Opposition parties of unnecessarily targeting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process of voter lists. According to him, the campaign has been launched to strengthen the integrity of the electoral system and remove irregularities from voter databases.
He stated that the verification drive is intended to detect fake voters, infiltrators, and individuals who may have entered their names in electoral rolls through improper means. The Chief Minister argued that such measures are necessary to maintain public confidence in the democratic process.
Dhami further claimed that criticism from Opposition leaders is politically motivated. He said the resistance does not arise from concerns over the procedure itself, but from discomfort with increased transparency in the electoral system.
Government Emphasises Transparent Elections
The Uttarakhand Chief Minister said the state government remains committed to conducting a clean and reliable electoral process. He stressed that electoral reforms and periodic verification exercises are important for preventing misuse of voter registration systems.
Referring to past practices, Dhami pointed out that similar voter list revision exercises had also been carried out during previous governments at the Centre, including when the Congress party was in power. He questioned why the current verification process was now being opposed despite such precedents.
According to the Chief Minister, the administration aims to make the electoral framework more accurate and dependable. He added that maintaining updated voter records is essential for safeguarding democratic institutions and ensuring that elections remain fair.
Warning Against Communal Disturbance
Apart from electoral matters, Dhami also spoke about maintaining social harmony in Uttarakhand. He warned anti-social elements against activities that could create communal tension or disturb peace in the state.
Without naming any specific organisation or group, the Chief Minister said the government would take strict action against those involved in unlawful religious conversion or attempts to disrupt communal balance. He reiterated that law and order would be enforced firmly to protect the interests of the public.
His comments come at a time when issues related to voter verification, migration, and social harmony continue to remain politically sensitive in several states across the country.
Focus on Administrative Accountability
Dhami also highlighted the need for accountability and transparency in governance during his address. He said the government is focused on strengthening administrative systems and ensuring that public institutions function effectively.
The Chief Minister urged party workers and officials attending the program to remain connected with citizens and support initiatives aimed at improving governance standards. He said development and public trust can only grow when administrative processes remain transparent and free from irregularities.
The voter list revision exercise has recently become a subject of political debate, with ruling and opposition parties expressing differing views over its implementation. However, the Uttarakhand government maintains that the drive is being conducted within legal and constitutional frameworks.
