Congress Rejects BJP’s Allegations

The Congress accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of attempting to divert public attention from economic concerns and foreign policy matters by raising questions about Rahul Gandhi’s international travel history. Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the ruling party was focusing on irrelevant issues instead of addressing challenges faced by ordinary citizens.

Ramesh criticized BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra for repeatedly targeting the Leader of the Opposition. According to him, the country is currently facing more pressing issues, including economic difficulties and diplomatic setbacks that deserve public discussion.

He also claimed that the government’s global image and foreign policy claims had weakened in recent years. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramesh alleged that the administration’s ambitions on the international stage had not matched the realities faced by the country.

During his remarks, the Congress leader suggested that Patra should raise more meaningful public issues rather than focusing on Rahul Gandhi’s travel record. He argued that repeated attacks on the Congress MP appeared politically motivated.

BJP Questions Funding of Foreign Visits

Earlier in the day, the BJP demanded greater transparency regarding the funding of Rahul Gandhi’s overseas trips. Addressing reporters at the party headquarters, Sambit Patra alleged that Gandhi had undertaken 54 foreign visits over the past 22 years.

Patra claimed that the overall spending on these trips was close to Rs 60 crore. He further argued that the expenses did not align with the Congress leader’s declared annual income and assets listed in election affidavits over the years.

According to Patra, Gandhi’s declared assets increased from Rs 55.38 lakh in 2004 to over Rs 20 crore in 2024. He questioned how such extensive travel expenses could be justified based on the publicly available financial disclosures.

The BJP spokesperson also alleged that several foreign visits were not fully disclosed and called for clarification regarding what he described as “undisclosed” or “mystery” trips abroad.

Congress Leaders Raise Governance Concerns

Congress MP Manickam Tagore also responded strongly to the BJP’s allegations. In a social media statement, he said the ruling party should focus on issues such as unemployment, inflation, the condition of farmers, border concerns and the economy instead of attacking opposition leaders personally.

Tagore argued that the public was seeking accountability on matters directly affecting daily life. He questioned whether the BJP would also release full details related to foreign trips undertaken by Prime Minister Modi and other senior party leaders during the past decade, including travel costs and official delegations.

The Congress leader further accused the BJP of using press conferences to shift public debate away from governance-related criticism. According to him, repeated personal attacks could not overshadow economic concerns and national security questions being raised by the opposition.

Political Tensions Continue Ahead of Key Debates

The latest exchange reflects the continuing political tension between the Congress and the BJP as both parties prepare for upcoming parliamentary and electoral battles. While the BJP has intensified its scrutiny of opposition leaders, the Congress continues to counter by highlighting issues related to the economy, inflation and foreign relations.

Political observers believe such confrontations are likely to continue in the coming months as parties sharpen their campaigns and attempt to shape public opinion ahead of future elections. The debate over accountability, governance and transparency remains central to the ongoing political discourse in the country.
