Infrastructure – Delhi Government Approves Renaming of Metro Stations and Public Landmarks
Infrastructure – The Delhi government has cleared a series of proposals to rename several metro stations, hospitals, and public landmarks across the national capital in an effort to reflect local identity and recognise notable public figures. The decisions were finalised during a recent meeting of the State Names Authority chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat.

The meeting witnessed unanimous approval from senior officials representing multiple departments and civic agencies. Among those present were the Chief Secretary of Delhi, officials from the Urban Development Department, representatives of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, and members of the Delhi Development Authority. The proposals focused on improving public convenience while preserving the cultural and historical character of the city.
Sports Complex to Bear Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Name
One of the key decisions taken during the meeting involved the naming of a new sports complex currently being developed in Sector-33 of Rohini near Begampur. The facility will now be known after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Authorities also approved a separate proposal to install a statue of the late leader within the premises of the complex.
Officials said the move was intended to acknowledge Vajpayee’s contribution to public life and national development. The sports facility is expected to serve residents of the surrounding areas once construction is completed.
Changes Approved for Metro Station Names
The State Names Authority also approved multiple changes related to Delhi Metro station names to make navigation easier for commuters and strengthen local recognition.
Under the new proposal, Rohini West Metro Station will be renamed Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro Station. Officials believe the revised name will help passengers identify the nearby hospital more easily.
Similarly, Rohini East Metro Station will now be known as Rohini Metro Station. Authorities noted that the simplified title would reduce confusion among daily commuters and visitors travelling within the area.
Dwarka Station Gets Local Identity Addition
Another major proposal discussed during the meeting related to Dwarka Metro Station. The authority approved the inclusion of Kakrola in the station’s name to better represent the surrounding locality. Following the decision, the station will now be called Dwarka-Kakrola Metro Station.
Officials associated with the proposal said the updated name aims to provide stronger geographical identification and reflect the social identity of the neighbourhood more accurately. The move is also expected to assist visitors unfamiliar with the area.
Hospital and Public Square Also Renamed
Apart from transport-related changes, the authority approved a proposal concerning a hospital currently under construction in Jwalapuri. The healthcare facility will be named Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital after completion.
In another decision, Britannia Chowk located in the Shakurpur area will be renamed Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk. The proposal received unanimous support during the meeting.
Authorities stated that such naming initiatives are often intended to honour individuals who have contributed significantly to public and social life while also strengthening the connection between civic spaces and local communities.
Government Highlights Cultural Significance
Speaking about the decisions taken during the meeting, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said recognising personalities associated with public service and national contribution remains an important responsibility of the government.
She added that Delhi carries deep cultural, historical, and social importance for the country, and such initiatives help preserve collective memory while reinforcing the identity of the capital. According to officials, more similar proposals may be reviewed by the authority in future meetings as part of broader urban identity planning across Delhi.
