Politics – EPS Questions Tamil Nadu Government Over Chennai Assault Case
Politics – A fresh political controversy has emerged in Tamil Nadu after allegations surfaced regarding the sexual assault of a minor boy in Chennai’s Kodambakkam area. The incident, which reportedly involved three accused persons including a police officer, triggered a strong reaction from AIADMK General Secretary and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday.

According to the details shared by the opposition leader, the victim allegedly faced severe abuse after being forced to consume alcohol. The boy later managed to escape from the accused and approached the Ashok Nagar police station to file a complaint. The case has since intensified the political debate over law and order in the state.
Opposition Raises Questions on Child Protection
Reacting publicly to the reports, Palaniswami expressed concern over the safety of children under the present administration led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. In a statement posted on social media platform X, he described the incident as deeply disturbing and questioned the government’s ability to ensure public security.
The former Chief Minister said the increasing number of crimes being reported across Tamil Nadu has created fear among residents. He argued that incidents involving vulnerable children reflect serious shortcomings in governance and policing.
Palaniswami also referred to the alleged role of a police officer in the case, stating that such accusations against members of law enforcement damage public confidence in the system. He noted that the victim showed courage by resisting the attackers and reaching the police station independently to seek help.
Criticism Over Law and Order Measures
The AIADMK leader further criticised the state government’s recent law and order review efforts. Referring to a video released by the administration about an official review meeting, he claimed such exercises appeared more symbolic than effective.
He questioned whether the government was taking genuine steps to control rising criminal incidents or merely conducting public relations activities. According to Palaniswami, stronger preventive measures and immediate administrative accountability are necessary to restore public trust.
The opposition leader’s remarks have once again brought the issue of women’s and children’s safety into political discussions in Tamil Nadu. Law and order has remained a key subject of debate between the ruling government and opposition parties in recent months.
Demand for Strict Action Against Accused
Calling for immediate legal action, Palaniswami urged authorities to ensure that every person involved in the alleged assault faces strict punishment under the law. He stated that the identity or official position of the accused should not influence the investigation process.
He also appealed to the government to focus more seriously on governance and public safety rather than image-building activities. According to him, people expect concrete action from the administration, especially in cases involving crimes against children.
The case has drawn attention from political leaders and the public alike, with many demanding a fair and transparent investigation. Officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the status of the accused or the progress of the inquiry.
Public Concern Grows After Incident
The Chennai incident has sparked wider concern over the protection of minors and the responsibility of institutions tasked with maintaining public safety. Child rights activists and members of the public have stressed the need for faster investigations and stronger safeguards for children.
Observers say such incidents often lead to broader conversations about police accountability, victim support systems, and the effectiveness of existing laws meant to protect minors from abuse. The matter is expected to remain a significant political and social issue in the coming days as further developments emerge.
Tamil Nadu police officials are reportedly continuing their investigation into the allegations while political reactions continue to intensify across the state.
