Fraud – Fake Godman Arrested for Cheating Devotees Through Ritual Claims
Fraud – A man posing as a spiritual healer has been arrested by the Dindoshi Police for allegedly duping multiple individuals by claiming to possess supernatural powers. The accused, identified as 37-year-old Rhythm Ashok Panchal, also known as Monty, is said to have carried out deceptive practices under the guise of performing rituals linked to superstition.

Claims of Divine Powers Used to Gain Trust
According to investigators, Panchal presented himself as someone with mystical abilities, convincing people that he could resolve their personal and professional issues. Police officials stated that he specifically targeted individuals facing difficulties in life, assuring them that his rituals could remove negative influences and improve their circumstances.
Senior Police Inspector Mahendra Shinde revealed that Panchal would instruct followers to bring unusual items for these rituals. These included alcohol, cigarettes, lemons, goat liver, and even ashes allegedly collected from cremation grounds. Such demands were presented as essential components of so-called spiritual practices.
Businessman’s Complaint Triggers Probe
The case came to light after a businessman named Anosh, who resides in Malad, approached authorities with a complaint. He informed police about Panchal’s activities, alleging that the accused had been misleading people by promising solutions to problems like career setbacks and family issues.
During interactions with followers, Panchal reportedly claimed he could eliminate evil spirits and address issues such as ancestral curses. Devotees were often asked to bring items like black cloth, black sesame seeds, dolls, kumkum, lentils, and other ritual materials, further reinforcing his image as a spiritual practitioner.
Rituals Designed to Mislead Victims
Police said that Panchal would consume alcohol and smoke cigarettes during these sessions, presenting it as part of the ritual process. Afterward, he would instruct individuals to wrap remaining items in cloth and discard them at specific locations, such as road intersections, claiming that this would solve their problems.
Investigators believe these acts were carefully staged to create a sense of authenticity and fear among followers. Victims were led to believe that failing to follow instructions precisely could result in serious consequences.
Threats and Intimidation Tactics
Authorities also revealed that Panchal allegedly used intimidation to maintain control over his followers. He reportedly warned them that disobedience or questioning his methods could lead to harm. In some instances, he claimed to be possessed by a deity and performed staged exorcisms to reinforce his claims.
Such tactics made it difficult for victims to challenge him, as many feared potential repercussions. Police noted that this psychological pressure played a significant role in allowing the accused to continue his activities unchecked for some time.
Growing Influence and Police Action
Over recent months, Panchal’s influence reportedly grew, with more people approaching him for help. His activities gained visibility in the local area, drawing in individuals who were unaware of the fraudulent nature of his claims.
Following the complaint, senior officers initiated a detailed inquiry. Upon verification, it became clear that Panchal had no special abilities and was exploiting people’s lack of awareness for personal gain.
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
Based on the findings, a case has been registered against Panchal under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Maharashtra law aimed at preventing inhuman practices and black magic. He was arrested and later remanded to police custody by a local court.
Further investigation revealed that Panchal lived in a chawl near Manchubhai Road in Malad, close to a municipal garden. Before adopting this fraudulent persona, he had worked as a gym trainer but had recently left his job.
Police officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and are examining whether more individuals were affected by his actions. Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and report similar incidents.
