ElectionCommission – Mamata Banerjee Criticizes Poll Body Over Malda Incident
ElectionCommission – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday strongly criticized the Election Commission, alleging that it failed to ensure the safety of judicial officers during an incident in Malda district. The remarks came a day after several officials involved in an electoral revision exercise were surrounded by protesters for hours before being rescued by security personnel.

Officers Surrounded During Electoral Roll Revision
The incident occurred on Wednesday when seven judicial officers were carrying out duties related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. According to officials, tensions escalated after local residents objected to the removal of certain names from voter lists. The situation turned volatile as protesters gheraoed the officers, preventing them from leaving the site.
Security forces later intervened and safely escorted the officials out of the area. No injuries were reported, but the episode raised concerns about the safety of personnel engaged in election-related duties.
Chief Minister Raises Concerns at Public Rally
Addressing a public rally in Murshidabad district, Banerjee condemned the Election Commission’s handling of the situation. She stated that the poll body had failed in its responsibility to protect officials working under its supervision.
She further alleged that the Commission had taken over key administrative functions in the state following the announcement of assembly elections. According to her, this included appointing its own officers in important roles within the civil and police administration.
Allegations of Administrative Control Shift
Banerjee pointed out that several senior officials in the state, including the chief secretary, home secretary, and director general of police, were replaced shortly after the election schedule was declared. She argued that these changes had effectively reduced the state government’s authority over administrative matters.
Expressing her dissatisfaction, she said such a situation was unprecedented and questioned the functioning of the Election Commission. She claimed that the state government’s powers had been significantly curtailed during the election period.
Claims of Larger Political Strategy
The Chief Minister also alleged that there was a broader political strategy behind the developments. She suggested that certain groups were attempting to create instability in the state with the aim of disrupting the election process.
According to her, there were efforts to provoke tensions that could potentially lead to the cancellation of elections and the imposition of central rule. These claims, however, have not been independently verified.
Remarks on Communal Divisions
In her speech, Banerjee also raised concerns about communal polarization. She alleged that individuals with divisive intentions had entered the political landscape and were attempting to influence voters.
She claimed that some of these individuals had come from outside the state and were trying to split votes, particularly among minority communities. Her remarks were aimed at cautioning voters against such influences during the election period.
Focus on Election Conduct and Safety
The incident in Malda has brought attention to the challenges faced by officials during election-related activities, especially in sensitive regions. Ensuring the safety of personnel and maintaining order during electoral processes remains a key responsibility for authorities.
As political tensions continue to rise ahead of the assembly elections, both administrative preparedness and public cooperation are expected to play crucial roles in ensuring a smooth and peaceful voting process.
