Education Reform –Political tensions intensified on Monday after Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned the police response to student demonstrations and urged the Union government to address concerns raised by young protesters. The protests, linked to demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and allegations surrounding the NEET-UG examination, have also disrupted parliamentary proceedings, with the Opposition pressing for an official response from the Centre.
Opposition Questions Police Response
Addressing reporters, Congress MP Pawan Khera expressed concern over the reported detention of students participating in demonstrations. He said the continued action against young protesters was unacceptable and called for accountability from the authorities responsible for maintaining law and order during the protests.
Khera also referred to statements made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has repeatedly criticised the treatment of students during recent demonstrations. According to Khera, the concerns raised by students deserve attention rather than forceful action, adding that the situation requires immediate intervention from the government.
Bihar Incident Draws Political Attention
The Congress leader also highlighted reports from Siwan in Bihar, where allegations emerged that an AK-47 rifle was used during police action connected to student protests. Calling the reports alarming, Khera said the Opposition wanted the matter to be discussed in Parliament and demanded a detailed explanation from the government.
He stated that Opposition members had attempted to raise the issue in the Rajya Sabha, arguing that incidents involving students in different parts of the country reflected a broader concern that required parliamentary scrutiny. According to him, the matter should not be ignored given the seriousness of the allegations.
Call for Home Minister’s Statement
Explaining the Opposition’s position, Khera said Union Home Minister Amit Shah should personally address Parliament and clarify the government’s stand on the incidents linked to student protests. He maintained that the concerns voiced by students were being echoed by Opposition parties inside Parliament and deserved an official response.
Khera further alleged that the government’s unwillingness to engage with these issues had contributed to repeated disruptions in the functioning of Parliament. He said meaningful discussion could only take place if the Centre responded directly to the questions being raised by lawmakers.
Bihar Government Announces Relief Measures
Meanwhile, the Bihar government announced that it would not pursue punitive or retaliatory action against individuals who took part in protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination before 6:00 PM on Sunday.
In an official statement, the state’s Home Department said it would begin the legal process to withdraw all First Information Reports (FIRs), criminal complaints, and show-cause notices filed before the specified deadline. The government also confirmed that those arrested or detained in connection with cases registered before the cut-off time would be released without delay.
The announcement further stated that no direct or indirect action would be initiated in the future against individuals for incidents that occurred before the notified deadline, providing relief to many of those involved in the demonstrations.
Protests Linked to NEET-UG Controversy
The government’s decision comes after several days of protests across Bihar over alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. Demonstrators have been demanding a transparent investigation into the reported paper leak allegations, along with broader reforms aimed at strengthening the higher education examination system.
The issue has evolved beyond the examination itself, becoming a significant political matter discussed both on the streets and inside Parliament. With the Opposition continuing to seek accountability and the Bihar government announcing legal relief for protesters, the debate over student rights, examination integrity, and governance is expected to remain a key national issue in the coming days.
