Education Crisis – Rahul Gandhi Targets Centre Over NEET Aspirant’s Death

Education Crisis – The death of a young medical entrance examination aspirant has reignited the political debate surrounding the country’s education system, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticizing the central government and raising concerns over the challenges faced by students preparing for competitive exams.

Education crisis neet death row

The remarks came after Akanksha Chaturvedi, a student from Madhya Pradesh’s Mauganj district, allegedly died by suicide in Nagpur. According to reports, the aspiring doctor had been struggling emotionally amid uncertainty linked to alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination process.

Family’s Sacrifice for a Medical Dream

Rahul Gandhi shared details about the student’s background, highlighting the sacrifices made by her family to support her ambition of pursuing a career in medicine. He said Akanksha’s father, a farmer by profession, had arranged financial resources through a loan obtained using his Kisan Credit Card to fund her education and coaching expenses.

According to Gandhi, the father also took up work as a cook in Nagpur so that his daughter could continue her preparation for the highly competitive examination. He described the family’s efforts as an example of the determination often shown by parents seeking better opportunities for their children.

Questions Raised Over Examination Controversy

Referring to the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG examination, Gandhi said the uncertainty created by allegations of a paper leak had deeply affected many students. He stated that the cancellation of the examination added further pressure and anxiety for candidates who had invested years of preparation in pursuit of medical admissions.

The Congress leader argued that the circumstances surrounding the student’s death reflected broader concerns within the education system. He alleged that repeated issues linked to examination management have undermined confidence among students and families across the country.

Criticism of Government Response

Gandhi also questioned the response of the authorities following the controversy. He criticized Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, claiming that administrative actions taken after such incidents often fail to address the underlying problems.

According to him, routine inquiries and committee formations have not resulted in meaningful reforms. He said students continue to face uncertainty despite repeated assurances regarding transparency and accountability in national-level examinations.

Allegations of Systemic Failure

The Leader of Opposition further argued that the incident should be viewed as a warning about the pressures faced by young people competing in high-stakes examinations. He accused the government of allowing the education system to deteriorate over the past decade, alleging that students are bearing the consequences of policy failures and inadequate reforms.

Gandhi said that while political power may change over time, the impact of disruptions in the education sector can affect an entire generation. He urged greater attention to student welfare and stronger measures to restore trust in examination processes.

Investigation and Re-Examination Schedule

The controversy stems from the NEET (UG) 2026 examination conducted by the National Testing Agency on May 3. The test was cancelled on May 12 following allegations of a paper leak. The matter is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Authorities have announced that a fresh examination will be held on June 21. The re-examination is expected to determine admissions for thousands of medical aspirants across the country while the investigation into the alleged irregularities continues
