Bail – A Delhi court has granted bail to a hotel cook who was arrested in connection with the Malviya Nagar hotel fire that claimed 22 lives earlier this year, marking a significant development in the ongoing criminal investigation.

The Delhi court on Monday granted bail to Kesar Negi, the hotel cook arrested by Delhi Police in the Malviya Nagar hotel fire case. The tragic blaze, which occurred on June 3, resulted in the deaths of 22 people and prompted a wide-ranging investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The court observed that the accused was no longer required for further investigation, paving the way for his release on bail.

Court Finds Further Custodial Investigation Unnecessary

Additional Sessions Judge Samar Vishal passed the order while hearing Negi’s appeal against an earlier decision of a magistrate court, which had rejected his bail plea on June 8. After examining the matter, the sessions court concluded that continued custody was not necessary at this stage of the investigation.

The order represents a change in the legal proceedings since Negi had remained in custody for more than a month following his arrest by Delhi Police. The investigation into the deadly fire, however, is expected to continue as authorities examine all aspects related to the incident.

Defence Claims Cook Had No Responsibility for Safety Systems

During the hearing, Negi’s legal counsel argued that the cook had been unfairly implicated in the case despite having no authority over the hotel’s fire safety arrangements or statutory compliance. According to the defence, he was employed solely as a salaried chef and had no role in managing the building’s infrastructure or ensuring adherence to safety regulations.

The defence further contended that Negi was being made responsible for failures that should instead be examined in relation to the property’s owners and those responsible for maintaining mandatory safety standards. His lawyers maintained that the allegations against him overlooked the distinction between operational staff and those with managerial control over the premises.

Defence Says Accused Tried to Prevent Further Damage

Negi’s counsel also submitted before the court that he had attempted to control the fire after it broke out rather than contributing to the tragedy. According to the plea, he made efforts to extinguish the flames and acted responsibly when he suspected that the blaze had been triggered by an electrical fault.

The defence stated that, upon realizing the possible source of the fire, Negi switched off the electricity supply in an effort to reduce the risk of the flames spreading further. His lawyers argued that these actions demonstrated an attempt to protect lives and property instead of negligence or criminal intent.

Investigation Into Deadly Fire Continues

The Malviya Nagar hotel fire remains one of Delhi’s most serious fire tragedies in recent months. Investigators continue to examine multiple aspects of the incident, including fire safety compliance, building regulations, and the responsibilities of individuals connected with the property.

While the grant of bail provides temporary legal relief to the accused cook, it does not amount to a determination on the merits of the case. The investigation and subsequent judicial proceedings will continue as authorities seek to establish accountability for the circumstances that led to the devastating loss of 22 lives.
