Flooding – Heavy rain on Tuesday disrupted normal functioning at the Somalwar Nikalas and Somalwar Khamla school campuses on Ranapratap Nagar Road in Nagpur’s Khamla area after floodwater, mud and loose soil entered the premises from an unfinished road construction site nearby. The overflowing water created difficult conditions for students, teachers and parents, with large sections of the school compound submerged. The incident has also renewed concerns over the impact of delayed civic projects during the monsoon season.
Unfinished Road Project Worsens Situation
Residents of the locality said the road improvement work was originally scheduled to be completed during the summer vacation so that schools could reopen without disruption. However, they alleged that the project remained incomplete because of administrative delays, leaving excavated areas exposed when heavy rainfall arrived. As a result, rainwater carried mud, debris and loose soil directly into the school grounds.
The inflow of water reportedly caused knee-deep flooding in parts of the campus, making movement difficult and increasing safety risks for children. The muddy conditions also affected access to different sections of the school.
Students Assisted to Reach Safety
As water levels continued to rise, school authorities and local helpers took precautionary measures to ensure the safe exit of students. According to reports, ropes were used to guide children through the flooded areas so they could leave the campus without being swept off balance. The unusual evacuation highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the immediate need for emergency assistance.
Parents waiting outside the school expressed concern after witnessing the challenging conditions under which students had to leave the premises. Many described the incident as avoidable if the surrounding infrastructure work had been completed before the start of the academic session.

Apart from disrupting daily classes, the accumulation of stagnant water mixed with mud and waste has raised fears of possible health hazards. Residents believe the unsanitary conditions could increase the risk of infections if the area is not cleaned quickly.
The waterlogged playground and open spaces have also interrupted sports activities and other outdoor school programmes. Teachers and staff have reportedly faced difficulties managing regular operations while ensuring student safety during the heavy rainfall.
Residents Demand Immediate Civic Action
Local residents and parents have questioned the planning and execution of the road project, arguing that essential construction work near educational institutions should be completed before the monsoon. They said the current situation reflects poor coordination and has unnecessarily placed students at risk.
Citizens have urged the authorities to deploy pumps to remove the accumulated water, clear the mud and garbage from the school premises, and accelerate the pending road construction. They have also called for long-term measures to improve drainage in the area so that similar incidents do not occur during future spells of heavy rain.
