Delhi – LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu Reviews MCD Preparedness on Waste and Civic Services
Delhi – Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday conducted a detailed review of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s ongoing civic initiatives, stressing the need for stronger execution and continuous monitoring to improve essential public services across the national capital.
The high-level meeting covered several priority areas, including solid waste management, garbage disposal, drain cleaning, waterlogging prevention, preparedness against vector-borne diseases, traffic-related concerns, and progress under the PM-UDAY Scheme.
Focus on Scientific Waste Processing
During the review, the Lieutenant Governor acknowledged the progress made in removing legacy waste from Delhi’s landfill sites. However, he underlined that the effort would have limited impact if newly generated waste continued to pile up without proper treatment.
Sandhu instructed officials to ensure that fresh municipal waste is scientifically processed every day alongside the ongoing remediation work. He also called for an effective monitoring system to verify that daily waste processing targets are consistently achieved, preventing the formation of new waste mountains.
Concern Over Low Waste Segregation
The review highlighted that nearly half of the city’s daily waste is still not segregated at its source, while around 50 percent continues to be transported directly to landfill sites instead of being scientifically processed.
Expressing concern over these figures, the Lieutenant Governor encouraged MCD officials to study the waste management practices adopted by the Indore Municipal Corporation, which has been widely recognised for its sanitation model. He suggested launching a pilot project based on the Indore system in one MCD zone to evaluate its effectiveness before considering broader implementation.
Monsoon Preparedness Reviewed
With the monsoon season underway, officials also briefed the Lieutenant Governor on measures taken to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and malaria.
The meeting included an assessment of drain desilting, anti-waterlogging arrangements, and other preventive steps aimed at minimising health risks and ensuring smoother civic functioning during heavy rainfall.
Traffic, Urban Schemes and Public Infrastructure
Apart from sanitation and public health, the review also examined issues related to traffic congestion around toll plazas and toll collection points. Officials discussed the present status of measures intended to improve traffic movement in affected areas.
Progress under the PM-UDAY Scheme, which focuses on granting ownership rights in unauthorised colonies, was also reviewed as part of the broader assessment of urban development initiatives in Delhi.
Early Planning for Winter Pollution
Looking beyond the current monsoon season, Sandhu directed officials to begin preparations well in advance for winter, when air pollution levels typically rise in the capital.
He instructed the civic body to prepare a comprehensive action plan aimed at reducing pollution, including road resurfacing work wherever required. The Lieutenant Governor also ordered a dedicated road safety audit of MCD-managed roads to identify accident-prone locations and address infrastructure deficiencies before they become major hazards.
Call for Greater Accountability
Concluding the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor urged MCD officers to remain alert, responsible and proactive while carrying out civic responsibilities. He said sustained improvements in cleanliness, public health and urban infrastructure would depend on timely implementation of projects and greater accountability at every administrative level.
According to Sandhu, a cleaner and more resilient Delhi can only be achieved through consistent execution of civic initiatives, coordinated planning and a strong commitment from all departments involved in delivering municipal services.
