AviationFuel – The central government on Wednesday indicated that domestic airfares are not expected to rise sharply, despite a significant increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices. Authorities have taken steps to soften the impact by permitting only a partial increase in fuel costs for domestic carriers.

Controlled Adjustment to Fuel Price Increase

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas explained that ATF prices in India have been deregulated since 2001 and are revised every month based on global market trends. Due to current international conditions, there were expectations that jet fuel prices for domestic use could more than double from April 1.

However, instead of allowing the full increase to take effect immediately, public sector oil marketing companies, in coordination with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, have introduced a phased and limited adjustment. This approach aims to prevent sudden cost pressures on airlines and passengers alike.

Limited Impact on Domestic Airlines

Under the revised structure, domestic airlines will experience a price increase of about 25 percent, which translates to roughly Rs 15 per litre. This is significantly lower than the anticipated rise linked to global benchmarks.

Officials stated that this measured step is intended to maintain affordability in domestic air travel while ensuring that airlines can continue operations without severe financial strain. By avoiding a complete pass-through of global fuel prices, the government seeks to balance economic realities with consumer interests.

International Flights Face Full Price Revision

While domestic carriers have been given some relief, airlines operating international routes will not receive similar concessions. These carriers will bear the full increase in ATF prices, as international aviation fuel costs remain directly aligned with global pricing mechanisms.

This distinction reflects the government’s focus on safeguarding domestic connectivity and keeping travel within the country accessible for a wider population.

Government Highlights Economic Importance

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu emphasized that the decision was carefully calibrated to support both passengers and the aviation industry. He noted that preventing a steep rise in ticket prices is crucial at a time when the sector is still navigating various challenges.

The minister also pointed out that stable air transport plays a vital role beyond passenger travel. It ensures uninterrupted cargo movement and supports trade and logistics networks, which are essential for the broader economy.

Global Factors Driving Fuel Price Pressure

The rise in aviation fuel costs is largely attributed to increasing global crude oil prices. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have disrupted energy markets, particularly around key transit points such as the Strait of Hormuz. This region is a major route for global oil shipments, and any instability there tends to push prices upward worldwide.

These developments have had a direct impact on aviation fuel rates, prompting concerns across the airline industry about operational costs and fare adjustments.

Clarification on Actual Price Increase

Earlier reports had suggested a dramatic surge in ATF prices, but Indian Oil Corporation later clarified the figures. According to the company, the increase is approximately 8.5 percent, not the previously indicated 115 percent.

Following the revision, the price of aviation turbine fuel in the national capital stands at around Rs 1.04 lakh per kilolitre. While the increase is notable, it is considerably lower than initial estimates, offering some reassurance to both airlines and travelers.

Overall, the government’s decision reflects an effort to manage external economic pressures without transferring the full burden to domestic consumers.
