Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that he is prepared to meet with senior officials from both China and Russia during this week’s Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers’ gathering in Manila. While no formal meetings had been confirmed, Rubio indicated that Washington remains willing to maintain direct diplomatic communication with Beijing and Moscow despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Possible Meetings During ASEAN Summit
Speaking to reporters before the meetings began, Rubio said the United States would welcome discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov if schedules allow.
He declined to discuss what topics could be raised during any potential talks, explaining that conversations between senior diplomats often involve sensitive issues that are better handled privately. Rubio emphasized that he would not comment publicly on possible negotiating points before such meetings take place.

First Official Visit to the Philippines
The visit marks Rubio’s first official trip to the Philippines since taking office as US Secretary of State. The country remains one of Washington’s key security partners in Southeast Asia, and the visit is expected to reinforce long-standing diplomatic and strategic ties.
