Senorita – Shankar Mahadevan Recalls Hidden Recording Story Behind Beloved Film Song
Senorita –As the celebrated road drama Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara marks 15 years since its release, music composer and singer Shankar Mahadevan has shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story about the making of the film’s memorable song Senorita. He revealed that actor Abhay Deol, who was initially reluctant to sing, unknowingly recorded the version that eventually became part of the final soundtrack.

A Song That Began as a Simple Film Sequence
Speaking about the creative process, Mahadevan explained that Senorita was originally planned as a light-hearted situational number rather than a major musical highlight. The sequence was designed around three friends travelling through a Spanish village, where they encounter local musicians, join the celebrations, dance to traditional rhythms, and blend those sounds with an Indian musical flavour.
According to Mahadevan, the concept naturally reflected the carefree spirit of the film and perfectly matched the atmosphere of the characters’ journey across Spain.
Creative Team Recognised Its Bigger Potential
As work on the composition progressed, Mahadevan said he and fellow composers Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa realised the track had the ingredients to become much more than a background song. They carefully refined the melody and spent considerable time developing an engaging hook that would stay with listeners.
He recalled that several musical ideas were explored before combining the strongest elements into the final composition. During the songwriting process, celebrated lyricist Javed Akhtar introduced the word “Senorita,” which became a defining part of the song and helped shape its identity.
Bringing the Film’s Stars Behind the Microphone
The composers also decided that the song would feel more authentic if the film’s lead actors performed the vocals themselves. Mahadevan said Farhan Akhtar was immediately comfortable in the recording studio because of his previous singing experience.
Hrithik Roshan also impressed the composer with his musical ability. Mahadevan remembered listening to one of Hrithik’s earlier recorded songs and felt his voice would add warmth and personality to the track, making him a natural choice for the recording.
Abhay Deol’s Surprise Recording Session
Among the three actors, Abhay Deol was the least confident about singing. Mahadevan recalled that the actor was hesitant to step behind the microphone and doubted his own ability to perform.
To help him overcome his nervousness, the composer invited him to the studio and assured him that the session would simply be a practice run. Mahadevan encouraged him to relax, enjoy the experience, and repeat the lines exactly as they were demonstrated without worrying about perfection.
Believing the recording was only a rehearsal, Abhay sang freely and without the pressure that often comes with an official take.
The Final Take Without Knowing It
Mahadevan later revealed that what Abhay believed was a rehearsal was actually being recorded as the final version. Once the session ended, the composer informed him that there would be no need for another recording because the performance had already been captured successfully.
The unexpected news left the actor pleasantly surprised. Although he had entered the studio expecting to return another day, Mahadevan felt the relaxed performance perfectly suited the song and chose to keep it in the finished version.
A Film That Continues to Connect With Audiences
Released in 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was directed by Zoya Akhtar and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment. The film featured Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif, and Kalki Koechlin in key roles.
The story follows three childhood friends who reunite for a road trip across Spain during a bachelor celebration. Along the journey, they confront personal fears, strengthen old friendships, and discover new perspectives on life. Over the years, both the film and its soundtrack have remained popular with audiences, with Senorita continuing to be remembered as one of its most enjoyable musical moments.
