Actor Dilip Joshi, widely admired for playing Jethalal in the popular comedy series Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, has disclosed that producer Asit Kumarr Modi initially offered him the choice between portraying Jethalal or his father, Champaklal. Speaking during the show’s 18th anniversary celebrations held on July 28, the actor reflected on the decision that ultimately shaped his television career.
Addressing the media, Joshi explained that he immediately felt he was not the right fit for Champaklal because his appearance did not match the character’s original concept. He also admitted that he had doubts about playing Jethalal, as he had grown up reading the Gujarati publication featuring Tarak Mehta’s work, where the illustrated version of the character looked very different from him.
Early Doubts Before a Memorable Journey
Recalling those initial conversations, Dilip Joshi said he was uncertain about accepting either role. The actor remembered that the printed caricature of Jethalal in the Gujarati magazine portrayed the character as a slim man with curly hair, which made him question whether he could convincingly bring the role to life.
Despite those concerns, Joshi decided to give the opportunity a chance. Looking back on the journey, he credited his success to good fortune and expressed gratitude that the show had continued to thrive for nearly two decades while remaining close to audiences across the country.
