Indian Student Murder Case – A 23-year-old woman from Punjab’s Ludhiana district, who had travelled to Canada to pursue higher education, has died after an alleged fatal assault at her home in Edmonton. The victim, Damanpreet Kaur, originally belonged to Samrala and had been living in Canada for nearly five years after arriving on a student visa. Canadian police have arrested her live-in partner, an Indian national, in connection with the case, while investigators continue gathering evidence.
Police investigation identifies death as homicide
The Edmonton Police Service said officers responded to a residence in the Silverberry area of southeast Edmonton on July 9 after receiving information about an unconscious woman with suspicious injuries. Emergency responders shifted Damanpreet Kaur to a hospital, where doctors treated her for critical injuries. Despite medical efforts, she died on July 12.
A post-mortem examination conducted on July 14 concluded that the cause of death was strangulation. Based on the medical findings, the office of the medical examiner officially ruled the death a homicide. The determination led investigators to expand their inquiry and examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Arrest made after investigation
Following several days of investigation, Edmonton Police arrested 22-year-old Ritish Kumar on July 22. Authorities charged him with second-degree murder in connection with the case. Investigators stated that the evidence collected so far indicates the matter is being treated as an intimate partner homicide.
Police have also clarified that they are not looking for any additional suspects at this stage of the investigation, suggesting they believe the accused acted alone. Officials said the investigation remains active as prosecutors and investigators continue the legal process and examine all available evidence before court proceedings advance.

Members of the Indian community in Canada, along with friends and well-wishers, have come forward to support Damanpreet Kaur’s family during the difficult period. A fundraising campaign was launched to help cover the costs associated with repatriating her body to India.
The campaign has received significant public support, raising more than $18,000 and moving close to its stated target of $20,000. The response reflects the concern and solidarity shown by community members following the incident.
