Prime Minister Modi shared his message through the social media platform X on Saturday, calling Ashadhi Ekadashi a spiritually meaningful occasion that reflects timeless values of devotion and kindness. In his message, he wished for happiness, harmony and prosperity for everyone and prayed that Lord Vitthal would inspire people to strengthen their commitment to serving society with sincerity and dignity.
Festival Marks Beginning of Chaturmas
Ashadhi Ekadashi, widely known as Devshayani Ekadashi or Hari Shayani Ekadashi, is one of the most significant observances in the Hindu calendar. This year’s festival is being celebrated on Saturday. According to Drik Panchang, the Ekadashi tithi commenced at 2:44 a.m. on July 25 and will conclude at 12:14 a.m. on July 26.
The occasion also marks the beginning of Chaturmas, a sacred four-month period observed with great reverence by devotees. During this time, many followers dedicate themselves to prayer, spiritual discipline and religious practices. Chaturmas is traditionally regarded as a period for reflection, restraint and strengthening one’s spiritual path.
Religious Significance of Devshayani Ekadashi
Ancient Hindu scriptures, including the Bhavishya Purana and the Padma Purana, state that Lord Vishnu enters Yoga Nidra, or divine cosmic sleep, on Devshayani Ekadashi. According to this belief, the deity remains in this symbolic state until Prabodhini Ekadashi, which is observed later in the year.
The term “Devshayani” is derived from Sanskrit and signifies the time when the deity enters divine rest. Devotees consider this transition spiritually significant, viewing it as the beginning of a season devoted to prayer, self-discipline, meditation and inner transformation rather than outward celebrations.
Rituals Observed by Devotees
On Ashadhi Ekadashi, devotees traditionally begin the day with a ritual bath before offering prayers to Lord Vishnu. Worship generally includes offerings of Tulsi leaves, fresh flowers, fruits and sweets. Many also recite the Vishnu Sahasranama or chant sacred mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu as part of their spiritual observance.
Fasting is another central aspect of the festival. The manner of observing the fast varies among families and regions. Some devotees avoid grains and cereals, while others observe a more rigorous fast before concluding it during the prescribed Parana period on the following day.
