Borewell Rescue – Ambala Child Dies After 21-Hour Operation to Save Him

Borewell Rescue –  A four-year-old boy lost his life after being pulled from a deep open borewell in Haryana’s Ambala district following an intensive rescue mission that continued for nearly 21 hours. Despite the coordinated efforts of multiple emergency agencies, doctors confirmed that the child had died before reaching the hospital.

Rescue Ends in Tragedy

The child, identified as Nirvair Singh, was rescued at around 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday from a borewell estimated to be nearly 220 feet deep in Dhaneora village. An ambulance immediately transported him to the Civil Hospital in Ambala Cantonment, where medical staff declared him dead on arrival. According to hospital officials, the boy showed no signs of life when he was brought to the emergency department.

Accident Happened While Playing Near the Fields

The incident took place at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday. According to family members, Nirvair had accompanied his father, Manjit Singh, to their agricultural fields, where they had gone to deliver breakfast to the child’s grandfather, Karnail Singh, who was already working there.

After the meal, Manjit resumed his work while the young boy began playing nearby. Family members said Nirvair noticed an uncovered borewell and started dropping loose soil into it. As he leaned closer to look inside, the damp earth around the opening reportedly collapsed, causing him to fall into the narrow shaft.

Family Alerted Authorities After Initial Rescue Attempts Failed

Hearing a loud noise, the family rushed to the borewell and repeatedly called out to the child. They initially tried to rescue him on their own but were unsuccessful because of the depth and narrow diameter of the borewell. The administration was informed about the incident at around 7:30 a.m., after which emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the location.

Officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Army, local police, and district administration jointly carried out the rescue operation. Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar reached the site to oversee the efforts and coordinate the response.

Authorities Ordered Action Over Open Borewell

Deputy Commissioner Tomar stated that the borewell measured roughly nine inches in diameter and extended about 220 feet below the ground. He said emergency teams were mobilized without delay after the administration received information about the incident.

The district administration has also directed the police to take action, in accordance with legal provisions, against those found responsible for leaving the borewell uncovered. Officials stressed that proper safety measures could have prevented the tragedy.

Tomar appealed to farmers and landowners to ensure that unused or abandoned borewells are securely sealed. He warned that even a moment of negligence can lead to irreversible consequences, especially in rural areas where children frequently play near agricultural fields.

Minister Reviews Rescue Operation

Haryana Cabinet Minister Anil Vij visited the accident site on Tuesday evening to review the rescue efforts. During his visit, he met the grieving family and received updates from officials involved in the operation. Rescue personnel continued working throughout the night using specialized equipment in an attempt to safely retrieve the child.

Incident Brings Back Memories of Similar Cases

The heartbreaking incident has once again drawn attention to the recurring danger posed by abandoned and uncovered borewells across the country.

Only a few weeks ago, a four-year-old child in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district was successfully rescued after remaining trapped in a newly dug borewell for nearly nine hours. The latest tragedy has also reminded many of the widely followed 2006 rescue operation in Haryana’s Kurukshetra district, when a five-year-old boy named Prince was safely pulled out after spending nearly 48 hours inside a borewell, an operation that received nationwide attention.
