Electoral Rolls – CPM Seeks More Time for Voter List Revision Process Across State

Electoral Rolls –  The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has appealed to the Election Commission of India to grant an additional month for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that many eligible citizens are struggling to complete the verification process within the current timeline.

Cpm seeks more time electoral rolls

The CPM State Committee said the existing deadline does not provide sufficient time for many voters to gather and submit the required documents. According to the party, limited public awareness about the revision process has further complicated participation, particularly for people living in remote areas and those facing social or economic challenges.

Concerns Over Access to the Revision Process

In its statement, the party highlighted that several sections of society are encountering practical obstacles while attempting to update their electoral details. These include residents of isolated villages, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, migrant workers, and economically weaker families.

The committee argued that these groups often face difficulties in obtaining necessary documents or reaching designated centres within the prescribed period. It cautioned that unless the timeline is extended, many genuine and eligible voters could unintentionally be left out of the final electoral rolls.

Call for Greater Transparency

CPM also stressed the need for greater openness during the Special Intensive Revision exercise. It proposed that updated voter lists should be displayed publicly at the village, ward, and polling booth levels so that residents can easily verify their details and raise objections if necessary.

The party maintained that making the lists widely accessible would improve public confidence in the process while reducing the chances of genuine voters being omitted because of administrative errors or lack of information.

Awareness Campaigns and Support Centres Recommended

Apart from seeking more time, the committee urged the Election Commission to organise awareness meetings in local communities to explain the procedures involved in the electoral roll revision. It said many people remain unaware of documentation requirements and verification steps, making it difficult for them to complete the process correctly.

To address these concerns, CPM recommended establishing dedicated assistance centres that can guide vulnerable citizens through documentation and application formalities. Such facilities, the party said, would be particularly useful for elderly people, persons with disabilities, migrant labourers, and families with limited access to government services.

No Deletion Without Due Process

The committee also called on the Election Commission to ensure that no individual’s name is removed from the electoral rolls without following a fair and transparent procedure. It insisted that every proposed deletion should be preceded by proper verification, official notice, and an opportunity for the concerned voter to present their case.

According to CPM, strict adherence to due process is necessary to protect the integrity of the electoral system and prevent the exclusion of legitimate voters because of procedural shortcomings.

Appeal to Protect Democratic Rights

Reiterating its position, the party said the Special Intensive Revision should remain transparent, inclusive, and consistent with democratic values. It urged the Election Commission of India to take immediate steps to address the issues raised and ensure that every eligible citizen is able to exercise the constitutional right to vote without unnecessary obstacles.

The committee said a fair electoral roll revision process is essential for maintaining public trust in elections and safeguarding democratic participation across all sections of society.
