Infrastructure – Eight-Year Delay in Yerra Kaluva Bridge Leaves Villages Awaiting Relief
Infrastructure – Residents across nearly 25 villages in East and West Godavari districts are still facing daily transportation challenges as the long-awaited reconstruction of the Yerra Kaluva bridge has yet to begin. The bridge, which once linked Kamsalipalem in Nidadavole mandal with Madhavaram in Tadepalligudem mandal, was destroyed during the severe floods of 2018–19. Even after eight years, the vital crossing has not been restored, affecting thousands of people who depend on the route for education, farming, business, and essential travel.

Temporary Route Continues to Create Difficulties
After the bridge was washed away, residents were left with only a temporary earthen road to travel between the two districts. The makeshift stretch has deteriorated over time, developing deep potholes and becoming increasingly unsafe, particularly during the rainy season. Daily commuters, school and college students, farmers, and local transport operators continue to use the route despite the risks, as no permanent alternative has been provided.
Farmers Face Ongoing Transportation Challenges
The prolonged absence of the bridge has created serious concerns for the agricultural community. Around 2,000 farmers rely on this route to transport crops and other farm produce to nearby markets. Heavy vehicles, including public transport buses and goods carriers, are forced to navigate the damaged road, leading to delays, higher transportation costs, and safety concerns. During periods of heavy rainfall, overflowing canal water frequently cuts off access completely, disrupting the movement of people and goods.
Residents Seek Faster Government Action
Villagers say repeated requests for rebuilding the bridge have been made over the years, but the project has remained pending despite changes in government. According to local residents, the continued delay has affected economic activity, educational access, and overall regional development. Community representatives have consistently urged authorities to approve the required funds and begin construction without further postponement.
Proposal Submitted for New Bridge Construction
Tourism and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh has announced that a proposal worth Rs 9 crore has been forwarded to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for approval. The proposed project aims to construct a new bridge that will permanently reconnect the affected areas and improve transportation between East and West Godavari districts.
Government Expects Early Start After Approval
The minister expressed confidence that the new bridge would significantly improve travel for residents of the surrounding villages while strengthening regional connectivity. He stated that construction work would commence once the state government sanctions the necessary funds. Local residents are hopeful that the approval process will move forward quickly, bringing a long-awaited solution to an infrastructure issue that has affected thousands of people for nearly a decade.
