Tourism – Devotees, public representatives, and citizens across Maharashtra marked the 353rd anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s coronation with ceremonies, floral tributes, and messages remembering his enduring contribution to the foundation of self-rule and public welfare.
Celebrations Held to Mark Shivrajyabhishek Day
People gathered at various locations on Saturday to commemorate Shivrajyabhishek Din, the 353rd coronation anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, observed this year according to the Hindu calendar. In Nagpur, followers paid homage to the revered Maratha ruler, recalling his vision of Hindavi Swarajya and his commitment to governance focused on the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Although the coronation anniversary is widely observed every year on June 6 under the Gregorian calendar, the traditional Tithi-based observance was held on June 27 this year, corresponding to Jyeshtha Shukla Trayodashi.
State Leaders Extend Greetings
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde offered his respects to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and conveyed greetings to people celebrating the occasion. In a message shared on X, he described the Maratha king as an enduring symbol of Maharashtra’s pride and extended his best wishes to devotees and admirers observing Shivrajyabhishek Day.
Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan also remembered the historic significance of the coronation. In his message, he highlighted that the ceremony at Raigad Fort represented the formal establishment of a people-oriented administration that continues to inspire future generations. He urged citizens to uphold the ideals and vision associated with Shivaji Maharaj’s leadership.
Historic Coronation at Raigad Fort
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned at Raigad Fort in 1674 in a grand royal ceremony that established him as the independent ruler of the Maratha Empire. The event remains one of the most significant milestones in Indian history, symbolizing the assertion of sovereign rule during a period dominated by larger imperial powers.
Known as the Shivrajyabhishek Sohala, the ceremony is traditionally observed on the thirteenth day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. Each year, followers celebrate the occasion according to both the Gregorian calendar and the Hindu lunar calendar.
Symbol of Independent Rule
Historians regard the coronation as a defining moment because it formally declared Shivaji Maharaj an independent monarch, challenging the prevailing authority of the Mughal Empire. At a time when recognition from the Mughal court was generally considered essential for rulers, Shivaji established an autonomous kingdom through his coronation, strengthening the foundation of the Maratha state.
