Politics – BJP Eyes Stronger Role in Punjab Ahead of Future Electoral Battles
Politics – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) believes it is entering a stronger phase in Punjab politics and is preparing to expand its presence across the state. BJP National General Secretary and Rajya Sabha nominee Tarun Chugh has said the party sees significant opportunities in Punjab, where issues such as governance, public safety, drug abuse and border security continue to dominate political discussions.

BJP Highlights Long Political Association With Punjab
Speaking about the party’s position in the state, Chugh noted that the BJP has maintained a long association with Punjab’s political landscape since the early years after Independence. He said the party has participated in public affairs for decades and has gradually strengthened its support base over time.
According to him, the BJP’s vote share has shown growth in successive elections, and the party is now focusing on all 117 Assembly constituencies. He also pointed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s popularity among sections of Punjab’s electorate and credited several infrastructure and heritage-related projects initiated by the Central Government for improving connectivity and tourism.
Focus on Development and Public Services
Chugh criticised the current state administration, alleging that several major promises made to voters remain incomplete. He cited concerns related to financial assistance schemes, agricultural support measures and welfare programmes.
He stated that the BJP intends to focus on education, agriculture and healthcare if given a larger role in the state’s governance. Highlighting health-related concerns, he said Punjab continues to face serious medical challenges and requires stronger healthcare infrastructure. He referred to investments in medical institutions and specialised healthcare facilities as steps that could help improve access to treatment and public services.
Drug Abuse and Law and Order Remain Key Concerns
When discussing the issues likely to influence future elections, Chugh identified drug addiction and law-and-order challenges as the most pressing concerns. He argued that organised crime and extortion activities have affected public confidence and require stronger administrative intervention.
He said efforts to address the drug problem should include greater investment in education, sports facilities and employment opportunities for young people. In addition, he called for broader reforms aimed at strengthening Punjab’s economy and creating sustainable growth.
Tourism and Agriculture Seen as Growth Drivers
The BJP leader also emphasised the potential of tourism and agriculture in boosting the state’s economy. Punjab’s religious and historical sites attract visitors from across India and abroad, and he suggested that further investment in tourism infrastructure could generate employment and economic activity.
On agriculture, he advocated stronger links between farming, industry and service sectors, arguing that diversification would help create new opportunities for rural communities while improving long-term economic stability.
Border Security Continues to Draw Attention
National security was another major theme raised during the discussion. Chugh said Punjab’s international border makes security concerns especially important for the state. He referred to incidents near police facilities and concerns expressed by security agencies regarding cross-border activities.
The increasing use of drones for smuggling narcotics and other illegal materials into border regions was described as a growing challenge. While acknowledging ongoing efforts by security agencies, he stressed the need for stronger coordination and governance mechanisms to address emerging threats.
Leadership Change and Party Expansion
Addressing the recent change in the state BJP leadership, Chugh said there was no controversy surrounding the transition. He described former state president Sunil Jakhar as an experienced leader and said the organisational change was part of a routine process.
The BJP leader also expressed confidence that public support for the party is increasing, citing its performance in local body and grassroots-level elections over recent years. He said many voters are looking for stability, development and effective governance.
Reaching Young Voters and Expanding National Presence
On the issue of youth engagement, Chugh said young voters are increasingly focused on employment, innovation, entrepreneurship and technology-driven growth. He argued that government initiatives in sectors such as start-ups, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing have helped create opportunities for younger generations.
Discussing the party’s growth beyond northern India, he pointed to recent gains in several southern states. According to him, the BJP continues to expand its organisational presence across different regions while promoting a development-focused political agenda aimed at attracting broader public support.
