Airport – Palasa Airport Project Aims to Boost Jobs and Transform Srikakulam Economy

Airport – The proposed airport at Palasa in Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam district is expected to become a major driver of regional growth, with the Central Government positioning the project as a long-term investment to create jobs, improve connectivity, and reduce migration for employment. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu said the airport is being planned to strengthen the district’s economy while helping it move beyond its long-standing image as a backward region.

Review Meeting Focuses on Project Progress

During a high-level review meeting held in Palasa on Sunday, the minister met public representatives, government officials, farmers, and local residents to assess the progress of the airport proposal. Discussions covered land acquisition, compensation, and the overall implementation strategy. The meeting also provided an opportunity for villagers to seek clarification on concerns related to the project.

Addressing those present, Ram Mohan Naidu stated that the airport would be developed under the Centre’s UDAN scheme using funds from the Airports Authority of India. He dismissed speculation that the project would later be transferred to private operators, assuring residents that it would remain under government ownership and management.

Airport and Industrial Hub Planned Together

The minister said the airport is only one part of a larger development plan for the region. Around 500 acres of additional land has been identified for future industrial establishments, which are expected to attract investment and create significant employment opportunities for local youth.

According to him, the government is preparing a structured employment policy that will give preference to eligible local candidates when industries begin operations. He noted that improved infrastructure can encourage businesses to establish manufacturing and service facilities in the district, creating sustainable livelihoods for nearby communities.

Development Expected to Reduce Migration

Highlighting the broader economic impact of the initiative, Ram Mohan Naidu referred to the development around Bhogapuram Airport, where infrastructure expansion contributed to higher land values and generated employment in sectors such as hospitality, logistics, and transportation.

He also pointed to the ongoing progress of Mulapeta Port, saying the project has attracted growing interest from national and international companies. According to the minister, similar cooperation from residents in Palasa could help transform the district into an important economic centre over the coming decades. He expressed confidence that future employment opportunities created through these projects would reduce the need for young people to seek jobs in Gulf countries, Singapore, and other overseas destinations.

Administration Assures Fair Land Acquisition

Srikakulam District Collector Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar assured residents that the airport project would not require the relocation or evacuation of any village. He said the administration would conduct the land acquisition process in a transparent manner while strictly following the provisions of the Land Acquisition Act.

The Collector further stated that farmers and affected landowners would receive fair compensation as prescribed under the law. He emphasised that the project would move ahead only with the cooperation and participation of local communities.

Farmers’ Concerns Addressed During Interaction

Officials used the review meeting to respond to several questions raised by farmers regarding compensation, land acquisition procedures, and project implementation. The administration reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency throughout the process and ensuring that all stakeholders remain informed as the airport project moves towards the next stage of development.
