Politics – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Wraps Up Delhi Visit After Key Talks

Politics –  Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to return to Chennai on Thursday after concluding his first official visit to New Delhi since taking office earlier this month. The visit drew political attention following his discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on several issues linked to the state’s administration and regional concerns.

No Meeting Scheduled With Congress Leadership

Sources within political circles indicated that Vijay is unlikely to hold separate meetings with senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi during his stay in the national capital. According to party insiders, no formal appointments had been arranged with either leader before the Chief Minister’s departure plans were finalized.

Officials familiar with the travel schedule said Vijay is expected to leave Delhi on a special flight and arrive in Chennai around 12.40 pm. The trip marked his first major engagement with the Union government after assuming office earlier this month.

Focus on Mekedatu Reservoir Dispute

A major point of discussion during Vijay’s meeting with Prime Minister Modi was the long-standing Mekedatu reservoir issue involving Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. According to an official statement released after the meeting, the Chief Minister urged the Centre to stop further progress on the proposed project across the Cauvery river.

The Tamil Nadu government maintains that the project goes against the final ruling issued by the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and subsequent judgments delivered by the Supreme Court. State authorities have consistently argued that any additional upstream storage structure could affect water availability for farmers and residents dependent on Cauvery water in Tamil Nadu.

Concerns Over Fishermen Detentions

The Chief Minister also highlighted the repeated arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. The matter has remained a sensitive issue in coastal districts, with fishing communities regularly seeking stronger intervention from both the state and Union governments.

During the meeting, Vijay reportedly requested immediate diplomatic and administrative measures to secure the release of detained fishermen along with their seized boats. The issue has frequently surfaced in discussions between India and Sri Lanka, especially after incidents involving fishermen crossing maritime boundaries in the Palk Strait region.

Debate Surrounding Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu

Another subject raised during the talks was the ongoing controversy linked to Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu, the traditional state invocation song of Tamil Nadu. Vijay is understood to have asked the Prime Minister to provide clear guidance allowing the song to be performed at the beginning of official government events.

The issue has recently become part of a broader political debate within the state, with different parties expressing varying views on cultural protocol and administrative practice during public functions. Supporters of the move argue that the song represents Tamil identity and cultural heritage, while opponents have questioned procedural aspects surrounding its mandatory inclusion.

First Delhi Visit Since Taking Office

Political observers viewed Vijay’s Delhi visit as an important step in establishing working relations with the Union government following his assumption of office. The discussions focused largely on administrative and regional matters rather than electoral politics, according to officials familiar with the meetings.

The Chief Minister’s interactions in the capital are expected to shape future coordination between the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre on water-sharing disputes, fishermen welfare, and cultural policy matters affecting the state.
