UkraineRussia – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv has officially handed over a list containing the names of 1,000 detainees to Russian authorities as preparations continue for a large-scale prisoner exchange between the two countries. The development comes amid renewed diplomatic discussions and temporary ceasefire efforts linked to recent Victory Day events.
Prisoner Swap Talks Move Forward
According to Ukraine’s presidential office, the proposed exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side is currently under preparation. Speaking during his nightly address on Sunday, Zelensky said international partners, particularly the United States, had taken responsibility for supporting the guarantees connected to the exchange process.
The Ukrainian leader described the planned swap as an important humanitarian step and emphasized that discussions on ending the ongoing conflict must continue alongside security negotiations. He stated that Ukraine remains open to direct dialogue aimed at reducing tensions and finding a workable diplomatic framework.
Zelensky also referred to recent remarks from Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying Moscow had signaled readiness for direct meetings. He added that Ukraine had consistently supported negotiations and was now waiting for a suitable format for future talks.
Temporary Ceasefire Faces Immediate Challenges
Despite Friday’s agreement between Russia and Ukraine to observe a three-day ceasefire from Saturday through Monday, both countries accused each other of violating the arrangement almost immediately after it came into effect.
Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed on Sunday that Ukrainian forces carried out more than 16,000 ceasefire violations within a 24-hour period. The ministry alleged that Ukrainian military units targeted Russian positions using artillery systems, mortars, rocket launchers, and drone operations.
Russian officials stated that their forces responded with retaliatory strikes against military infrastructure, including artillery positions, command centers, and drone launch locations. Moscow had earlier reported nearly 9,000 alleged ceasefire breaches on Saturday across several regions near the conflict zone.
Ukraine Reports Civilian Casualties
Ukrainian authorities, meanwhile, accused Russian forces of continuing attacks during the ceasefire period. Officials in Kyiv reported that at least one civilian was killed and 15 others sustained injuries in strikes carried out across different parts of the country on Sunday.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said Russian troops launched around 60 attacks on Ukrainian positions during the day. Ukrainian officials argued that continued military actions demonstrated the fragility of the temporary truce and highlighted the difficulty of implementing lasting ceasefire measures.
The latest accusations from both sides reflect the continuing distrust between Moscow and Kyiv, even as diplomatic channels remain open for humanitarian agreements such as prisoner exchanges.
International Attention on Peace Efforts
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to draw close international attention, particularly from Western nations involved in mediation efforts and security discussions. Analysts believe the proposed prisoner exchange could become one of the largest humanitarian agreements reached since the conflict intensified.
While no final date for the exchange has yet been confirmed publicly, officials from both countries have indicated that preparations are progressing. International observers view the arrangement as a potential confidence-building measure, although broader peace negotiations remain uncertain.
The ceasefire was initially announced to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day commemorations, an event marking the Soviet Union’s role in World War II.
