Politics – Kharge Files Rajya Sabha Nomination Amid Karnataka Congress Turmoil
Politics – Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge officially submitted his nomination papers for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from Karnataka on Friday at the Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru. The filing took place in the presence of several senior party leaders, highlighting the importance of the election for the Congress leadership in the state.

Senior Leaders Gather for Nomination Filing
Among those accompanying Kharge during the nomination process were Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Their presence underscored the party’s efforts to present a united front ahead of the biennial Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for June 18.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi and Kharge arrived in Bengaluru and were welcomed by top state Congress leaders, including Chief Minister Shivakumar, Karnataka Congress President B.K. Hariprasad, and Congress Working Committee member Siddaramaiah.
Symbolic Environmental Gesture at Airport
Upon reaching Kempegowda International Airport, Rahul Gandhi participated in a tree-planting activity. He planted and watered a sapling, a gesture that was attended by several senior Congress figures, including Congress General Secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, Minister M.B. Patil, Siddaramaiah, and Chief Minister Shivakumar.
The event was viewed as an opportunity for party leaders to come together at a time when the newly formed Karnataka government is facing internal challenges.
Cabinet Discontent Creates Political Pressure
The visit by the national leadership coincided with growing dissatisfaction within the Karnataka cabinet. Water Resources Minister Ramalinga Reddy announced his intention to resign, alleging that promises made during government formation had not been fulfilled.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Reddy stated that he would submit his resignation and leave the final decision to the party leadership. According to him, he had been assured that he would be entrusted with the Bengaluru Urban portfolio after a specified period as part of an understanding reached during cabinet formation discussions.
Reddy claimed that both Chief Minister Shivakumar and his brother, D.K. Suresh, had personally assured him that the arrangement would be implemented. However, he said he was eventually assigned the Water Resources Department despite repeated assurances regarding the Bengaluru Urban portfolio.
Muniyappa Expresses Unhappiness Over Portfolio Allocation
In another challenge for the state government, senior Congress leader K.H. Muniyappa voiced strong disappointment over the ministry assigned to him. The veteran leader indicated that he would not take charge of the Food and Civil Supplies Department and appealed to the party’s central leadership to intervene.
Muniyappa is considered one of the most experienced Congress leaders in Karnataka. A seven-time Member of Parliament and current legislator from Devanahalli, he has held several significant positions during his political career, including serving as a Union Minister. He has also previously managed the Food and Civil Supplies portfolio in the state.
Leadership Faces Early Governance Test
The developments have emerged shortly after the formation of the new Congress government under Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, which assumed office earlier this week. While the party leadership seeks to focus attention on the Rajya Sabha election process, dissatisfaction over cabinet responsibilities has created fresh political challenges.
With senior leaders gathering in Bengaluru and internal concerns continuing to surface, the coming days are expected to be crucial for the Congress as it works to maintain unity while preparing for the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls.
